The Philosophy of Tradition and Innovation In this session, we will explore the idea of tradition, the things we do because they’ve been passed down through time and innovation, and the new ideas that can change how we live. Through stories, games, and discussion, we’ll think about why people follow traditions and when it might be right to do something different. Together, we’ll reflect on how old and new ideas can work together to shape the future.

DNA - Past, Present and Future Explore the history of DNA, a dive into the secret code that is inside every living thing. Through hands-on activities and discussions you will imagine the amazing possibilities and big questions that come with unlocking the code of life and what the study of DNA might mean for our future.

Light Through Time: From Candles to Lasers How our understanding and use of light has evolved- from early fire-based sources to modern fibre-optic communication.

Ancient innovation - cuneiform writing We will look at the development of cuneiform writing, and read some texts from thousands of years ago that were written in that form. We may even get to write in cuneiform ourselves! Painting: shaking it up! Painting is an age old tradition, but paint brushes haven’t always been the same! In this session we look at how brush technology has changed over time and make our own brushes to use in creative and unpredictable ways.

Garden Croquet Following a discussion about the the origins and history of this traditional sport, pupils will play a game of Garden Croquet on one of our beautiful pieces of lawn. This will be an opportunity for interaction and re-enactment of one of the continent’s oldest and most traditional sports.

Guillaume Apollinaire: The Great Innovator of French Poetry Guillaume Apollinaire was a true pioneer of French poetry, breaking away from traditional forms to create new, exciting ways to express emotion and ideas. He invented the concept of calligrammes (shape poems), where poems took visual shapes that reflected their meaning. Come along to this workshop to explore how Apollinaire’s bold ideas changed the world of poetry and have a go at creating your own calligramme.

Foley Sound Art Can you recreate the sound of a flock of birds using only rubber gloves? Or walking through snow using corn flour? Dive into the world of post-production movie-making with Foley. Foley is the reproduction of sounds which are recorded in sync with what is happening on a screen. In this session, we will have the opportunity to test various items and materials to find what sounds work best in time to a film sequence, adding our own sound effects to a short movie clip.

Traditional craft -. Learn the art of paper quilling Using simple quilling techniques we will create a 3D picture using coloured paper, capturing a modern take on a traditional method.

“Earthquake-proof” buildings - traditional vs. modern innovation This session will look at countries that over time have experienced many earthquakes. Whilst looking at traditional building designs, we will also look at how modern innovation has supported the difficult task of “earthquake-proofing” buildings. The session will culminate in a group task of trying to develop an “earthquake-proof” structure.

Tradition vs. Innovation: Play, Debate, and Decide! Tradition vs. Innovation Bingo, where we will race to match traditional and modern inventions, sparking discussions on how innovations have transformed everyday life. Then, we’ll dive into the “Keep It or Change It?” Debate Battle, where teams defend or challenge traditions, developing persuasive arguments on whether they should stay the same or evolve for the future.
