A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13
Our Year 13 students have once again had a very busy week as we near the Easter holidays. Today the Year 13 Geography students went to Westfield, White City to the Vue Cinema where they attended a revision day for their A Level. These cinema workshops are designed and delivered by the trusted tutor2u subject teams, all of whom know what students need to succeed in the 2025 exams. The workshop had four fast-paced, interactive and fun sessions delivered in the Vue cinema screen, which the pupils found extremely interesting. They took away lots of great advice on effective exam technique and were given a booklet packed with useful information on how to tackle the exam in the summer. Our Music students were lucky enough to have Dr Chris Tarrant, Senior Lecturer in Music at Newcastle University, and one of the authors of ‘The Symphony from Mannheim to Mahler’ come in today to talk about the War of the Romantics and musical meaning in the nineteenth-century symphony. Not only was this a fantastic lecture but the content directly links to the core component of the Eduqas A Level music course. All students thoroughly enjoyed the lecture and said it had broadened their knowledge ahead of the exams. Finally, our Drama students had their Drama practical exams today, which are worth 20% of their final grade. The two themes were ‘The Trial’ and ‘Di, Viv and Rose’. The students also had to perform their monologues. All the students have worked very hard and put a lot of effort into their productions, it was lovely to see the talent of the students in action. Lastly, congratulations to Seth H, 13ESA for achieving a distinction in his recent Grade 8 guitar exam. This is a fantastic result!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen “When they first arrived, they came quietly and stealthily as if they tip-toed into the world when we were all looking the other way.” Through the eyes of nine-year-old Ade, we see a dystopian London be infiltrated by the “Bluchers”, menacing plants, dissolving all buildings in sight. Ade’s stabil- ity is at risk, and with a mother to care for and no chance of escape, he’s all on his own. Its unique exploration of themes such as depression, sacrifice, bravery and death make this book, despite it being a science fiction, radiate reality. Ade’s perspective of his story is handled with maturity and care, reflecting his role as a young carer that could easily place him as one of the thousands in our world. At a time of world conflicts infiltrating our lives, the ‘Boy in the Tower’ makes readers believe in true, beautiful human kindness through the relationships Ade builds throughout the novel. This book is for anyone who needs a pick me up, and is an incredibly accessible read for all! - Aisha Y, Year 12
