EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS ADVANCEMENTS NEW
Sheila & Steven Backus ARIZONA Finding Freedom with Melaleuca
A brisk start with Pacesetter helped Sheila advance to Director 3 in about four months. She built steadily. At Convention 2015, expecting their first child and dealing with morning sickness, she vividly remembers, “Melaleuca Sr. Vice President of Sales Darrin Johnson unexpectedly invited me onstage to announce in front of everyone that I had advanced to Senior Director!” It was a moment that was pregnant (literally!) with the future. Today, Sheila is the mother of three children and is now a new Executive Director. The family lives happily on one acre across from a river, an hour and a half from the heat and big-city rush of Phoenix. It was a move they were able to make because of Melaleuca, Sheila says. “We have 25 chickens, four ducks and three ducklings, four turkeys, and a hound dog, and we’re planning to get our four-and-a-half-year old daughter a horse. If I still had to commute, we would never have this life. We love it here!” They are now financially able for Steven to plan toward an early retirement in eight years at the 20-year mark instead of retiring after 32 years. “Our family functions better when he is home,” Sheila says. For Sheila and Steven, Melaleuca was never a choice between good or just getting by. It was a choice to be positioned for better, best, and beyond with Melaleuca. Now their future is free to hold whatever dreams may come. TP
Many stories of coming home to Melaleuca tell of a long, winding, and often difficult road leading up to it. Sheila tells a different sort of story. When her brother enrolled in Melaleuca and reached out to share the impressive online wellness store, “I wasn’t opposed,” she recalls, “but I was happy and busy. I was newly married and working a full-time career in health-care marketing.” The future looked good. But because of her persistent brother and her husband’s thought process about Melaleuca, the future has turned out to be great! “The products made perfect sense to both of us, but Steven was so impressed with Melaleuca, he said, ‘If we’re going to shop here, let’s go for everything they offer!’ I had a high-paying salary and Steve is a fireman for the City of Phoenix, but he looked further ahead and said, ‘Someday we might have kids, and the residual income would be helpful, and after all, everyone needs a plan B.’ So I listened to him!” In that shared moment of decision, Sheila and Steven changed their future long before it arrived. They are now able to live in a way that is deeply fulfilling with a freedom and joy they may never have had without “plan B.”
“The idea of not having to live somewhere because of a job—who has that flexibility in their life?” Sheila says. “We can try anything! We love to travel, and I am confident I could build my business anywhere if that was what we wanted to do.”
