ALLENtOWN, PA - In lateOctober about 60 members and friends of CREWLehighValley gathered in a fourth floor space of Allentown Financial Center that offered a birds-eye view of the transformative construction projects ris- ing in the city’s downtown. Diagonally across the street was the PPL Center, the five-acre square arena that will house the Lehigh Val- ley Phantom hockey team and with the Two City Center office building towering next door, the group reviewed the history of downtown Allentown’s retail landscape, learned about current plans and explored the vision of the future to attract the best retail mix to support area development in Allentown’s Neighbor- hood Improvement Zone (NIZ). Attorney Richard Somach III , a member of Norris McLaughlin& Marcus, P.A., dis- cussed his family’s landmark store, which was a magnet for generations of women seeking prom, bridal, or special event gowns. Robert Bungerz , who co-authored Allentown Re- membered, shared memorabilia and recalled the department stores that once dominated the city scene. Allison Lisiecki with City Center previewed the retail, residences and office opportunities now in development by City Center Investment Corporation through- out the NIZ. Phase One will include up to 350 new luxury apartments, 650,000 s/f of Class A office space and 50,000 s/f of upscale retail and restaurant space. n
Jane Schiff, a past president of CREW LV, organized the program
Bob Bungerz recalled how city leaders developed the Park and Shop concept in 1949 to promote business for downtown merchants
