PODS of fun at Russell High School

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

On the Food Network channel, the Holi- day Cupcake Wars episodes are the most popular shows for foodie viewers during the Yuletide season. Some potential future cupcake decorating contenders were in training at Russell High School during the annual PODS holiday student curriculum session. Allison Sinder gives her full concentration as she tops the outer edge of a chocolate cupcake with a ring of white frosting. She fills in the centre of the dark cupcake top before placing the finished dessert treat onto a paper plate with a collection of other frosted cupcakes. «I’m usually in the talent show,» Sinder said, smiling, regarding why she chose cup- cake decorating for her PODS experience this year. «It’s fun. You forget that you have exams next week.» The PODS program is an annual collec- tion of fun workshops that are part of the Russell High School’s pre-Christmas break curriculum. Students decide if they want to take part during the designated PODS day or continue with their regular curriculum classwork. Sandra Beaubien, PODS teacher/ sponsor, says that the aim of the project is to provide another means for students and staff to connect with each other in an informal way. «It’s also a really good way for students to interact outside of a classroom situation,»

said Beaubien. This year’s PODS curriculumoffering on Dec. 18 included workshops on cupcake decorating, sushi making, ball hockey and dodge ball games, synchronized drumming using large exercise balls as the drums, ka- raoke, and other activities. Teachers like Sarah Hill and Dominique Côté in the cup-

cake workshop and Lisa Elminowski in the sushi POD, serve as instructors, drawing on their own personal expertise in the activities offered to students. «I do cake decorating inmy spare time,» said Côté, smiling, as both she andHill note that the food-related activities seem most popular in the PODS curriculum.

«Everyone likes the PODS that have to do with food,» agreed Elminowski. The PODS programalso provides students involved in the school’s LINK Crew program an opportunity to exercise their leadership skills training as they help with both the planning and supervision of each workshop. Plus the PODS program is fun.
