WHO CAN GET BARIATRIC SURGERY You may be eligible for bariatric surgery if: You are unable to maintain a healthy weight despite previous weight loss efforts PLUS one of the following: You weigh 100 pounds or more over your ideal body weight Your body mass index (BMI, is at least 40 (BMI calculator); Your BMI is at least 35, but you also have medical problems related to obesity, such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or diabetes.
