The most easterly of the Caribbean islands, pear-shaped Barbados is fringed by a coral reef and shimmers under a warm Caribbean sun. First settled by the British in 1627, it gained Independence in 1966. Traditions might hark back to colonial times, but the flamboyant African sway infuses local life.
