Greetings everyone, We have had a few first this year! Some we have hoped for and some we didn’t see coming. Number one: Thank you to all our bull buyers last year, we sold out of bulls by last summer. The only breeding Bull we had on the farm was the one we had to go out and buy to use! This is what we call a good problem for a short time. As of date, I’m writing this, we are not sure if we have a calf out of them. We are excited to see the next week of calves to see how they will turn out. The weather cooperated again this year for the most part. The fall and spring calves keep growing along with the cattle market. Usually, we have 60% plus heifers born but last year was not the case, the plus side of having more bull calves last year gives us more to sell, and less heifers to sell. As most of our buyers know we offer half of our heifer crop and sell a choice of the pairs you pick one, we keep the other one. AI went well. We tightened up our calving season, made it through breeding, picked up some calves to think about showing. Our grandson Kenneth led his first heifer into the ring at Louisville during the Junior National Hereford Expo. He had fun and wants to keep showing Grandma and Grandpa are excited. Then at the Iowa State Fair all family hands on deck, we had a great time reconnecting with our Hereford family and friends. Shortly afterwards Tom and Jo took their first ever trip without the kids or cattle!! Over 8 days they covered over 3,600 miles, with 21 different cattle programs visited. They came back and had enjoyed themselves, who would have thought. They are also planning next year’s trip already. Fall calving came soon and once again these calves keep raising the bar with every crop. In no time the American Royal was upon us, and we were honored to sponsor a couple heifers for the Young Breeders Competition in conjunction with the World Hereford conference. This was very educational and enjoyable for everyone. The winning team US blue and team UK Hereford cattle Society were the two teams using our heifer, these young breeders all have great potential in the industry. A first for the K7 Family and an enjoyable one! Once back on the farm we started looking forward towards Denver and picking out what we wanted to take and ended up with a carload. This set us up for another first when both the quality of cattle, family support and quantity of bulls made it possible to show our first Carload of bulls at the National Western Stock Show, National Western Stock Show Division Champion Carload of Bulls was more than we expected when we picked out bulls for the trip. Then the most recent first we have had since the sale, is calving season! In the thick of calving, having 4-5 calves a day is nothing new but this year we managed to have eight calves on the same day. This has been keeping the chore boy (Tom) busy feeding, bedding, tagging, and weighing. Thank you and see you all on sale day! Tom Heidt and Family
