MAKING TAX DIGITAL – WHAT IT MEANS FOR SUBCONTRACTORS
DAMP BELOW A ROOF INTERSECTION? A cavity wall external skin becomes an internal skin below the roof level. Penetrating wetness will gravitate and permeate there, which is why Building Regulations require dampness to be prevented in any parts of a structure that should be kept dry. Cavity Trays Ltd is the original and longest- established specialist, with trays for all styles of roof intersections – whether flat, pitched or curved – for new and existing walls. Get in touch with Cavity Trays for information, guidance and technical manuals via email at enquiries@ cavitytrays.co.uk or on 01935 474 769.
HMRC’s ‘Making Tax Digital (MTD)’ initiative is expanding, with new rules coming into force from April 2026. Businesses and sole traders earning more than £50,000 must comply from April 2026, those earning over £30,000 from 2027, and those earning more than £20,000 from 2028, which will bring 900,000 more people into the system. MTD aims to close the £5 billion ‘tax gap’ by reducing errors in self-assessment. But for many sole trader subcontractors that still rely on handing over a year’s worth of receipts in one go, the shift to digital record-keeping and quarterly updates may prove a real challenge. From 2026, paper-based or manual systems won’t cut it. All records must be kept digitally, and quarterly submissions made using HMRC-approved software. At EEBS, we recognise that many subcontractors aren’t ready for the changes.
That’s why we’re committed to helping our clients and their teams adapt to the new requirements. Over the next year, we’ll provide regular briefings, ongoing support, and practical solutions to ensure a smooth transition. Are you looking for guidance? If you or your subcontractors need guidance, EEBS is here to help. Visit www.eebs.co.uk or call the EEBS team on 01245 493 832 .
