King's Business - 1962-06

Thee w ill I cherish, Thee w ill I honor, Thou, my soul’s glory, joy and crown.” Jenifer and Robin joined in with all their hearts when they came to the second stanza: “ Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands, Robed in the blooming garb of Spring, Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, Who makes the woeful heart to sing.” Robin whispered to Jenifer: “ That is really where Spring is . . . in your heart.” Jenifer whispered back: “Yes, when you have Jesus . . . that’s the secret.” The Sunday school class asked the children to eat with them but they politely declined, saying they must get home. No sooner had they turned into the highway than they saw the black car coming very fast. Jenifer waved her white scarf, and the car came to a sudden stop with a shriek ing of brakes. At the wheel was the chauffeur, with a worried look on his face. And in the back of the car were Robin and Jenifer’s father and moth er! They jumped out of the car and soon had their arms around the chil dren. “We were terribly frightened when you weren’t home,” said their father. Their mother was wiping away her tears. “Where did you go?” she asked, “The servants said you never left be fore.” “We were looking for Spring; it was so dark inside the house,” Robin explained. “ Did you find it?” asked their fa ther. “Yes, we did, in flowers, and birds, and trees, and sunshine, and fresh air, but most of all in the hearts of chil dren who loved the Lord,” answered Robin gravely. “ They sang about Him,” said Jeni fer, as they all climbed into the limou sine. “You must tell us all about it when we get home,” said their mother, “ Meantime we have some good news for you. Your father and I are through with our travels and we are going to stay home and write books about them. Are you glad?” “ Oh, yes!” shouted the children to gether, “ Spring will come to our house now! ” “ If we let Jesus come in,” Robin added. “And sing about Him,” Jenifer said. And that is how Spring was found. And truly Robin and Jenifer, their father and mother, and even the ser vants, lived happily ever after. * Used by permission of Hope Publishing Company. 37

“ You can feel Spring in the sun too. It makes you warm and lazy,” he said. “ Like Pepper and Salt; they love to lie in the sun; I wonder if Cook fed those lazy cats,” he said. They walked over a small hill and turned into a side road. “Here’s something else to smell!” shouted Jenifer, pointing a clump of violets at the foot of a tree. “And see too!” Robin agreed, “ Look! there are purple and blue and yellow ones!” “ And there’s a white one!” Jenifer exclaimed. “ Let’s not pick any,” Robin decided, “They would just wilt and they look so pretty like that.” “How can we taste Spring?” Jeni fer asked. “ Look for some berries; it’s too early for most of them but maybe we can find a few,” and they searched until they found a tiny bush covered with red currants. Soon their tongues were stained bright red. They went on, hand-in-hand, keeping to the side road, for they knew that it would not be very long until the big limousine would be along. Anyway, after they found Spring, they meant to go back, for they were good children and real ly they didn’t want to worry the ser vants who were all very kind to them. But children must have adventure sometimes. “ I’ve an idea!” said Jenifer, “ Let’s try to hear Spring while we eat our lunch!” “ O.K.!” answered Robin, who was ready to try those sandwiches, “How about sitting on this old tree stump? It has little green leaves growing out of it . . . the ground looks cold and damp.” They listened while they ate and soon there was the lovely trilling note of a thrush. Jenifer’s eyes shone. “ It is just like music, isn’t it?” she asked. Just then there came to their ears the harsh voice of a bluejay, and Robin laughed. They heard the buzzing of bees and the wee sounds of other insects, the whirrings and stirrings that take place in the woods in Spring. “Are you satisfied that we have really found. Spring?” Jenifer asked thoughtfully. “No, not entirely,” said Robin seriously. “ Oh, there’s the park. Let’s go there!” There were people everywhere and most of them were children. One group was singing and Robin and Jenifer moved over so that they could hear the words. They were singing: '‘There’s sunshine in my soul today More glorious and bright JUNE, 1962

Than glows in any earthly sky For Jesus is my light.” *

A n d w h en they came to the verse: “ There?s springtime in my soul today, For, when the Lord is near, The dove of peace sings in my heart, The flow?rs of grace appear” * the children just looked at each oth er for here w as the kind of Spring they w anted .
