But the principle of the law has always existed for it is the mind of God as to what man ought to be and what he should do. However, man, in order to be, must have life; and, in order to do, he requires righteous ness. Of himself, man has neither, and is under the curse of the law from which Jesus Christ alone is able to deliver. II. T he S ubstance of the L aw (20:3-17.) With the one exception of the fourth commandment, which deals with Sab bath-keeping, each of the ten com mandments is enjoined upon the Church in the New Testament Epis tles. Hence, although under grace, and not under law, the Church is not without law. But the obedience of the Church results from the inner principle of life in Christ/Jesus, and not from an outside pressure. That principle of the new nature, which provides spiritual life and righteous ness, is r e c e i v e d in regeneration through faith in Jesus Christ. Once the brother of Henry Ward Beecher preached for him in his great church. When the congregation was aware that the regular pastor was not to preach, many rose to leave, whereupon the brother of the famous minister made the fol lowing announcement: “All who came to worship Henry Ward Beecher this morning may de part at this time. The rest may remain to worship God.“ First, we consider the Godward as pect of these commandments (vs. 3-11). God is supreme; there are no rivals since there are no equals (v.3). He is spiritual; any man-made ma terial image of Him is forbidden. The highest conception of man’s im agination is far below the realities of the infinite God. The world, the flesh, and the devil •attract man by appealing to the sensual part of his being; God appeals to the spiritual nature. That is why many of the so- called “ aids to worship” are in direct violation of this command (vs. 4-6; cf. John 4:24). God is holy. His Name represents His character; to take His name “in vain" means to use it false ly (v. 7). Finally, He is to be re membered continuously by the faith ful observance of the Sabbath day (vs. 8 -il). Desire to work seven days indicates greed; less than six, folly. Innumerable tests have proven that six days’ work, with one day’s rest, is ideal for both man and beast. Second, the manward aspect of the commandments is viewed (vs. 12-17).
