4. "An altar of earth thou «halt make unto me" (Ex. 20:24). A provi sion of God’s grace! Knowing that Israel would not be able to keep the perfect law He had given, God pro vided an altar. This speaks of Hie cleansing of Calvary. “ The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin’’ (1 John 1:7).

UNWANTED No room at any inn for this mother with leprosy. Long weary miles she trudged carrying her baby. No doors were open to her along the Way. No doors were open until they reached a mission colony. There they found shelter and help— for body soul.

MEMORY VERSE: “He that keepeth the law, happy is he” (Prov. 29:18). AIM: To show the importance of giving God first place in one’s heart and life. APPROACH: While the Children of Israel were traveling from the land of Egypt to the land which God had promised to give to them, there were many things which they needed to know. Since there were about two millions of these people, they had to have some rules for living together. They needed to know how to worship God, how to rear their families, and many other important things. LESSON STORY: One day Moses, the man whom God had chosen to lead the Children of Israel to their new land, went up onto a mountain and talked with God. Moses did not see God, but he heard God’s voice. God was going to give the people some rules for living. If they obeyed these rules, He promised to love His people, and to guide and protect them always. As G od talked to Moses on the mountain, the people who were camp ing down in the valley sometimes saw lightning and heard thunder, and they were frightened. When Moses came down from the mountain, he told the people not to be afraid, for God was only trying to tell them how to .keep from sinning. When he told them what God had said, they promised, “ All that the Lord hath spoken we will do.” One of God’s most important rules was that the Children of Israel should never make idols, statues, or images, which they would worship instead of Him. They were told to make an altar (a pile of dirt or stones) upon which they should build a fire, and offer a sacrifice, as they talked to God. God knew it would be easy for the Chil dren of Israel to copy the heathen nations around them who worshiped idols. By telling His people exactly how He wanted them to worship Him, God hoped that they would never worship idols. We should think that no one would want to worship gods who were unable to love them and care for them, but soon the Children of Israel disobeyed this very im-
