FAVORITE HALLOWEEN MEMORIES

There may be a lot of questions about how Halloween will play out this year but I can assure you that the Halloween spirit will be in full effect one way or the other. When else can grown- ups (and I guess kids too) dress up in absurd or scary costumes and not get chased off the neighborhood. With that in mind, we wanted to share some of our most memorable Halloween stories from some of our staff. So here goes: Dr. Giordano (Phil) - “When I was a kid, everyone got together after going trick-or-treating and all of us kids would get into a big shaving cream fight. We all ended up white as ghosts, which I suppose is appropriate for Halloween.” Lauren - “One year, my grandmother made me a hand-made trick-or-treat bag that I thought was the absolute coolest thing ever. I still have that basket even now.” Casey - “When I was six, my mother made our own house into a haunted house without me knowing and scared me half to death. I ran out of the house

and all the way to the library because I thought my mom was crazy. To this day, I still hide under the blankets and lock the doors on Halloween... thanks, mom.” Dr. Ostling (Chris) - ”One year, my mom had one of her friends who was a very skilled makeup artist paint the Joker’s face on me from Batman and I went as The Joker - complete with purple suit and everything. I won best costume at the junior high dance. What an accomplishment!” So there are our most memorable Halloween moments. Some fun ones, some sweet ones, some scary ones and some funny ones. OSTEOARTHRITIS IS A PAIN! Physical Therapy Can Help!

As we all age, our bodies experience a certain “wear and tear” on cartilage and joints. This can cause inflammation and pain, known as arthritis. According to the American Arthritis Foundation, Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, making itself apparent in people as they age. It can certainly take a toll on one’s body, resulting in achy or painful joints after exercise, after a long day on one’s feet, or even after prolonged periods of inactivity, thus causing joints to constrict. The most common areas of Osteoarthritis are found in the fingers, hips, knees, and spine. These are all joints that we use excessively, even in our daily lives. Just think - by the time you lift yourself out of bed, shower, brush your teeth, eat breakfast, and prepare to begin your day, you’ve already used these joints a multitude of times. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that pain can occur in them over time. If you believe you may be experiencing Osteoarthritis, give one of our physical therapists a call today to discuss pain relief. Why do we experience Osteoarthritis? While it is true that Osteoarthritis is most common in older folks, that is not always necessarily the case. It is possible that Osteoarthritis can present itself in younger adults, especially if they are prone to weak joints, poor dieting, or

if they aren’t very active. Your cartilage works hard to protect your joints by absorbing the natural shocks that your body experiences on a daily basis. Therefore, much of your likelihood regarding Osteoarthritis is dependent upon the physical and nutritional lifestyles you partake in. Joint alignment can alter and the muscles around a joint can weaken over time, causing the cartilage to shift or thin. As cartilage wears down, Osteoarthritis becomes much more common. As Osteoarthritis progresses, more symptoms can arise. The most common symptoms are: • Joint pain. • Swelling or tenderness in or around the joint(s). • Inflammation or flare-ups of pain in the joint(s) after use. • Feeling stiff after sitting or laying down for prolonged periods of time, especially when getting up in the morning. • Crepitus - also referred to as a “cracking or crunching” feeling when moving the joint(s), or the sound of bone rubbing on bone.

Healthy Recipe: Buffalo Chickpea Taquitos

Exercise Essentials Try this simple exercise to relieve your arthritis pain.

INGREDIENTS : • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 medium-sized onion, chopped • 2 cloves of garlic minced • 1 bell pepper chopped • 1 1/2 cups cooked chickpeas • 1/2 cup tomato sauce (passata) • 3 tbsp hot sauce (or more to taste)

Helps To Strengthen Grip

BALL GRIP Hold a ball in your hand, then squeeze tightly for 15 seconds. Repeat 5 times with each hand.

• 2 tbsp plant-based milk • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 1 tsp onion powder • 3/4 tsp coconut sugar • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

• 1/2 tsp smoked paprika • 1/2 tsp ground cumin • 10 small flour tortillas • Sea salt & black pepper to taste • Chili powder to taste

INSTRUCTIONS: Using a fork, roughly mash chickpeas in a bowl. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook for 3 min, then add garlic and spice mix and sauté for 1 min. Add all other sauce ingredients and chickpeas to the pan and bring mixture to a boil. Let simmer on low heat for about 2-4 min, stirring occasionally, then turn off the heat. Add more chili powder to taste. Preheat oven to 410 degrees F (210 degrees C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place about 2 tbsp of the filling onto each tortilla and roll them up tightly. Place every tortilla seam-side down on the baking sheet, next to each other. Brush them with a little bit of vegetable oil (to make them even more crispy). Bake in the oven for about 15-20 min or until they are golden brown and crispy. Drizzle with vegan cheese sauce (optional). Enjoy with your favorite dip!
