What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

One of the simplest and best definitions we’ve found for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is from Moz, a company that provides SEO tools:

“ ...the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.”

The Google Web Administrator Team has created a series of free and informative YouTube videos entitled #SearchForBeginners, which will help you create a strong online presence. Episode 8 - SEO Explained - provides wonderful information that will clarify any questions you may have about SEO. We’ve included it below.

Want to dive deeper into search engine optimization? Here are some good resources. You’ve learned what SEO is and you’ve already gotten some great tips. Your institution’s web administration and/or IT team does many things behind the scenes to make sure that your websites are optimized for SEO. But there are other things you can do as a content creator to improve SEO, including understanding how it works, so that the content you create uses the keywords and search terms your audience is using.

One of the best ways to learn about SEO is to use the free resources provided by Google. Google provides information about SEO and search in a series of free comprehensive guidelines. They include:
