Trustees Meeting Agenda | October, 2024

Proposal: To develop a Master of Science in Sport Coaching (MSSC) program at Central Washington University (CWU) which will attract its first target audience of coaches/teachers within Washington State. The second target audience will be to retain current students from various programs, such as the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Sport Management. The BS in Sport Management offers four specializations: Sports Communication, Sport Business, Sport Coaching, and Recreation Management. Additionally, CWU offers a Minor in Sport Coaching as well as a Master of Science in Sport and Athletic Administration with two specialization options. Introduction: Dr. Brian McGladrey, Chair of the Sport and Movement Studies Department, and Dr. Sathy Rajendran, Dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies are seeking to develop a Master of Science in Sport Coaching (MSSC) program. Initial research and analysis of this degree program are presented below with supporting data points provided. This analysis and any conclusions presented should be considered only as supporting factual evidence, and not an endorsement for or against the development of this new degree. Narrative: The MSSC has the potential to advance the careers of existing coaches while also providing a path to head coaching positions for existing undergraduate students. Because many collegiate head coaching positions require a graduate degree, this program could provide advancement opportunities for existing coaches and graduates of the Department of Sport and Movement Studies . The program will provide students a stronger foundation for their coaching career, while also providing a path for promotional opportunities to existing coaches. Students will graduate with a core understanding of sport pedagogy, ethics, legal liability, risk management, and conditioning. The Department of Sport and Movement Studies surveyed current high school coaches in Washington State to measure potential interest in the MSSC. Of the 805 coaches who completed the survey, 52.1% (419) indicated “yes” they would be interested, while 37.6% (302) indicated they might be interested. This program will be offered online with one weekend of in-person seminars each summer. For now, the MSSC is meant to be a five-quarter program (45 credits) with students starting in the summer and finishing the following summer. While three existing faculty will be responsible for most of the instruction, there is the potential for additional adjunct faculty to be hired. Research & Analysis: A search of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) website provides employment projection data across all occupations and sectors through 2032. The projection of growth for Coaches (also Coaches and Scouts) is 9% which is higher than the estimated 3% increase for all occupations and would add 25,000 jobs to the 275,200 estimated Coaching jobs in 2022 1 . The projection of growth for High School Teachers is 1% which is slower than the estimated 3% increase for all occupations and is expected to add 11,100 jobs to the 1,072,300 estimated jobs in 2022 2 .
