Competition: An MS in Sport Coaching will experience some competition from regional programs, and through the online platform. Having an online program can help reach more place bound students, but also widens the field of competition. For example when searching “masters in sport coaching online” some of the top results are University of Northern Colorado (MA - Sport Coaching), University of Denver (MA - Sport Coaching), Ohio University (Master’s in Coaching Education), Florida State University (MS - Athletic Coaching), and West Virginia University (MS - Sport Coaching) which was recently rated as #1 in the Best Online Master’s in Coaching Degree Programs of 2022 4 . More locally, the University of Washington offers a M.Ed. in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership accredited through the National Committee for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE). The NCACE operates as a program under the United States Center for Coaching Excellence. It is unclear from the department’s proposal whether it would be necessary to earn additional accreditation to remain competitive in this field. Additionally, Pacific Lutheran University offers a summer coaching institute that requires 15 OSPI clock hours (three online courses, five clock hours per course). Clock hour courses can be used by Washington State educators seeking continuing education credits, and can be used for salary advancement or to renew their teaching certificate. Though clock hour programs differ from quarter/semester programs, they represent another avenue for teachers to pursue salary advancement and credentials.
