Trustees Meeting Agenda | October, 2024

Central Washington University Board of Trustees October 18, 2024 ACTION – Approval of President Wohlpart’s Evaluation (CWUP 1-10-050)

In accordance with CWUP 1-10-050 – Powers and Duties, the CWU Board of Trustees has conducted its annual evaluation of President Wohlpart. This requirement is also reflected in Section IV of the Presidential Contract (Evaluation and Contract Extension) which requires the board to “evaluate the performance of the President using such methods and criteria as the Board may determine in consultation with the President.” The Board approved performance goals on Friday, October 22, 2021, and completed their evaluation of the President for the 2023-2024 academic year on Friday, July 26, 2024. The Board expressed appreciation at the collaborative and inclusive way in which President Wohlpart has led CWU, listening to and elevating a wide variety of voices. Specific initiatives that have been accomplished have elevated the university as a whole, including: • The completion of a new Vision, Mission, and Values through a collaborative and inclusive process that led to the elevation of equity, inclusion, and belonging. They greatly appreciate the president’s leadership on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the work that the university community has accomplished in the last three years. While the university community still has work to do, great strides have been made to elevate equity and belonging. • Bringing the Strategic Plan to life and focusing the Annual Board Retreat on presenting the accomplishments of the first year of the strategic plan. They appreciated the way in which the university community feels deeply connected to the Strategic Plan and how it is being lived at the university. • The visibility of the great work being done by faculty, staff, and students at CWU and the professionalism and passion which they have witnessed at the many presentations at Board meetings. • The implementation of Values-based Budgeting with clearly developed definitions, benchmarks, and information. It will be important to effectively share this information across the university, and especially in Academic Affairs, so that faculty and staff can discover ways to set priorities, restructure their work, and examine curriculum and scheduling to meet the new budget reality. • The work that has been accomplished in the Shared Governance Workgroup is a great beginning to develop a clearer understanding of how shared governance operates in higher education. The next steps of sharing what has been learned across the university will be essential in developing an understanding for the way in which shared governance groups participate in different decisions at the university. • The president’s visibility with students and at university events is evident to the Trustees and very much appreciated. This kind of attention to our students, faculty, and staff builds community and makes it clear that their work matters. • The elevation of our fundraising work has been very strong, and a lot of progress has been made with donors. While this work may not be highly visible to the university community, the strength of what has been accomplished will allow the university to thrive.
