Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions With These 3 Tricks
We all deserve a do-over on our 2020 New Year’s resolutions. The COVID-19 pandemic got between many of us and our goals. But the truth is that even in the best of times, it can be difficult to stay committed to a resolution for long enough to see it through. If you plan to set goals this year (like the financial resolution we outlined on Pg. 2), try one of these three methods to make them stick. 1. Use an established strategy as a guide. Brilliant thinkers have already plotted out ways to achieve tough goals, so why waste time reinventing the wheel? The internet is full of premade templates and proven approaches. Strategic Coach, for example, has a four- step method called The Strategy Circle (get a free copy at Now. StrategicCoach.com/Your-Life-Strategy-Circle) and ToDoist offers a series of templates with step-by-step directions for achieving specific goals like “Organize Your Finances” and “Read More Books” at ToDoist.com/ templates/2021-goals. 2. Create a vision board. You are much more likely to achieve your resolutions if you think about them every day. A vision board — a collection of images that remind you of your goals — can help! To learn how to create a vision board, visit OprahMag.com and search “Vision Board.” After making yours, hang it in a prominent place in your home or office to keep your goals at the forefront of your mind. 3. Reward yourself for small steps. Psychologist BJ Fogg teaches that tiny habit shifts can create lasting changes in our behavior. To make it easier to achieve your goals, prioritize the small steps, and reward yourself for them. For example, if your goal is to eat healthier, consider it progress every time you have a smoothie for breakfast or leave the store without buying junk food. These positive behaviors will inspire others and put you on track for success.
