VA St. Louis Health Care System Employee Update

Oct. 10, 2024

Did You Know? Director gives insight on encounters, scholarships and more

Happy Thursday, VA St. Louis Team. Here’s a “Did You Know” quiz for you – Did You Know that there is still time left to close patient encounters from Fiscal Year 2024? The team has done an amazing job and our encounters are up 10 percent compared to FY23. And you have closed well over 99 percent of our Veteran patient encounters. Thank you! We still need to make sure that each encounter we have with a Veteran is closed - for the Veterans' care and their treatment files. It takes a team to take care of our patients. And everyone on the care team has encounters with Veteran patients. Less than 1 percent is a great achievement and sounds like a small amount, but we want to get credit for the work you’re doing. The way we get credit is through Veterans Equitable Resource Allocation (VERA) dollars, and it’s all budget related. While it takes two years to catch up (we’ll get money for 2024 closed encounters in 2026), money is allocated to medical centers based on the number of encounters we close. If they’re left open past the deadline, which is Oct. 14 this year, we won’t receive money you and your teams have earned for those encounters. This is why it’s so important to capture your work by closing your encounters. We know it’s sometimes challenging and in the coming year, we’re going to work together to make it easier to close these encounters timely. Thank you for the work you’ve already done. We will do even better in the coming year as we work together.

Did You Know that recently for the first time , our team administered medication called Tenecteplace, or TNK, to a patient. This is huge news because the job of this medication, a type of thrombolytic, is to bust blood clots caused when the patient has a stroke. Timely administration of TNK saves brain cells that otherwise would be damaged by stroke. I’m thrilled with this progress and so happy we have this life-saving medication available. Kudos to everyone involved in making this happen.

Here’s another one. Did You Know that we are, and have been, in the window for our triennial Joint Commission visit? It’s true! So what does that mean to you? The Joint Commission visits healthcare facilities every three years as part of an accreditation process. In some ways, it’s not unlike many of the 56 visits we’ve had this year where they look at what we’re doing, annotate where we have

Director, from Page 1 challenges and give praise when we’re knocking it out of the park. It’s different, though, in that because they’re an accrediting body, it’s vital for us to do well. But I’m not worried. I’m not worried because if we’re doing the right things every day even without visitors watching, we’ll do the right things when they’re here. And if I’ve learned anything since I arrived over a year and a half ago, it’s that you want to do the right thing. And you know how I know you’re doing what is right? Because I see it when I round. I hear it from your leadership in our morning meeting. And those 56 visitors we’ve had? They told me. We’re not perfect, we still have things to work on, but I feel great about whenever The Joint Commission shows up – and you should too. You’ll start seeing tips on how to prepare for the visit from our Quality Management team. I recommend that you talk through these tips with your teams to ensure everyone knows what to expect. And remember, if you see something, say something. And finally, Did You Know we have a scholarship program for employees? That’s right! The College After Work Program is accepting applications through Nov. 23, 2024. To be eligible, you need to have worked here for at least a year, have at least a satisfactory on your most recent performance appraisal, have no disciplinary actions in the past 12 months and have approval from your supervisor and service chief. If you meet all of those requirements and are working on your first bachelor’s degree, you can earn up to 45 college credits – and we’ll foot the bill! Check out more information including on where to apply and who to contact if you have questions in the Announcements section of Page 2. That’s it for this week, everyone! I hope you have a great weekend – the weather looks like it will be beautiful, so try to enjoy it!

Cute little pumpkins Women Veteran Program, CDCE team up to shower new, expectant moms

On Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, the VA St. Louis's Women's Veteran Program and the Centers for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) proudly hosted the Annual Women Warriors Baby Shower at the VFW Post 3944 in Overland, Mo. Being back in person was a special treat. For more than a decade the VA St. louis have been proud to host this event. This year’s theme was “A little pumpkin is on the way,” with 29 families participating! “This event could not have been possible without the assistance of our generous community partners: Cardinals Care, the charitable arm of the St. Louis Cardinals, Hero’s Care, Fairview Heights Elks, local chapters of the daughters of the American Revolution, VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary and the strong partnership between the VA St. Louis Health Care System CDCE and Women’s Health Program team. They made this event a true success,” said Sylvia Stephens, Women Veterans Program Specialist. The Women Warriors Baby Shower was a heartwarming event dedicated to providing essential care packages for Veteran mothers. Each package contained a plethora of useful items such as a pack-n-play stroller or highchair, diapers, baby wipes, and diaper bags overflowing with goodies. Team Fred Bird was on site warmly distributing these items and posing for photos. This event aimed to support Veterans during a critical time in their lives. The families expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation for the magnitude of this event and its support to our pregnant moms. We are humbled by the opportunity to honor the service and sacrifices of our Women Veterans while also paying tribute to their

VA St. Louis HCS Police Services hosted its "Coffee with a Cop" event Oct. 9 at John Cochran. This outreach initiative provides a unique opportunity for Veterans, guests and staff to connect with dedicated officers in a relaxed and informal setting. The mission of Coffee with a Cop is to break down barriers between police officers and those they serve. “Coffee with a Cop here at the VA is important because it is a time for our officers to engage with Veterans they may never get an opportunity to engage,” said Capt. Isshawn- O’Quinn.” Attendees enjoyed coffee, donuts and conversation while getting to know the officers who protect our VA community. The event was a success, fostering stronger relationships between our officers and the veterans they serve. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who participated and made this event possible. Celebrating

Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Week Oct. 6-12 The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) is proud to join nuclear medicine professionals worldwide in celebrating Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Week, taking place from October 6-12, 2024. Established in 1986, this annual event underscores the remarkable innovations and growing impact of nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, and theranostics in revolutionizing healthcare. These fields offer unprecedented insights into the body’s inner workings, often detecting diseases at much earlier and more treatable stages than traditional imaging techniques. “From advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment to recent breakthroughs in Alzheimer's and dementia research, nuclear medicine is improving lives—and educating others about these advancements is crucial for the continued evolution of healthcare,” said Cathy Sue Cutler, PhD, FSNMMI, president of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI). “Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Week provides the ideal platform to do just that.”
