Driving is one of the freedoms many people get to experience. For some, it’s their career, and for others, it helps them navigate to their work, personal get-togethers, and travel. A clean driving record is crucial for many reasons. Let’s look at how points on your driving record can affect you.
INSURANCE A traffic violation can include an illegal lane change, speeding, a DUI, or a car crash. These violations will put points on your license, increase your monthly insurance cost for several years, and make it difficult to switch to other insurance companies. If you have a clean driving record, you can receive deductibles. If you are in a car accident, you may be able to pay less out-of-pocket expenses if you have a clean driving record. Some insurance companies offer accident forgiveness if you avoid an accident over a certain time period. SUSPENDED LICENSE If a traffic violation is severe, such as excessive speeding or too many violations in a short period of time, your license could be suspended. Your license suspension varies depending on the severity of your traffic violations. For example, your license could be suspended for six months or up to a year. Contact your traffic attorney for more information about how long your suspension is and what you can do in the meantime. COMMERCIAL DRIVERS It’s incredibly important that you have a clean driving record because your career depends on it. It also helps your employer have less driver turnover. Traffic violator’s school (TVS) is an option that some people take advantage of when getting their citation forgiven. But as a commercial driver, you are unable to go to TVS if your traffic ticket occurred in a commercial vehicle. If you receive a violation in your personal vehicle, you may be approved by the traffic court to enroll in TVS. If you decide to go this route, TVS will not conceal your ticket from your employer or insurance company. It’s difficult to try and get your ticket dismissed or lowered on your own. That’s why it’s important to contact a traffic attorney. If you’ve received a traffic ticket, allow your friends at Bigger & Harman to assist you! We can try to lower your charges in traffic court, attempt to get a dismissal, or raise the “reasonable doubt” card. So give us a call today, and we will look at your case.
