Washington, D.C. - The Indian Gaming Association applauds the appointment of Chief Lynn Malerba to serve as the Treasurer of the United States. This appointment marks yet another win for Indian Country as Chief Malerba will be the first Native American to serve as the Treasurer of the United States. For the first time in U.S. history, a Tribal leader and Native woman’s signature will be on the nation’s currency. In addition, Chief Malerba announced that as part of her role as Treasurer, the long-awaited establishment of the Office of Tribal Affairs within the Department of Treasury, which Chief Malerba will lead.

Chief Malerba is the female lifetime chief in the Mohegan Tribe’s modern history. Prior to her appointment as Treasurer, she served as a member of the Treasury Tribal Advisory Committee. In addition to leading the new Office of Tribal Affairs, Chief Malerba will also have oversight of the U.S. Mint, serves as a liaison with the Federal Reserve, and oversees Treasury’s Office of Consumer Policy. The Indian Gaming Association would like to thank President Biden for his continued commitment to supporting and strengthening Indian Country. Chief Malerba joins Secretary Deb Haaland, and federal judges Lauren J. King, Suzanne Sykes, and Lydia Griggsby in historic appointments by President Biden.
