The following discussion provides a brief overview of each program. Post-9/11 GI Bill. This education program was established in 2008 for individuals who served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. Benefit eligibility is determined by the total amount of aggregate active duty service incurred after September 10, 2001. Chapter 6 provides a table which outlines the available benefits based on the amount of active service and more details on the Post-9/11 program. With the passing of the “Forever GI Bill,” there is no time limit for individuals whose last discharge date is on or after January 1, 2013. If release from active duty was before January 1, 2013, there is a 15-year time limitation for use of benefits. Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) — Selected Reserve. The MGIB–SR program provides education benefits to members of the Reserve and Guard. Basic eligibility criteria include a six year obligation and completion of initial active duty training (IADT). Eligibility for the program normally ends the day the reservist leaves the Selected Reserve. The table below outlines the current benefit rates (October 1, 2021 - September 30, 2022) payable under the MGIB–SR program.

TRICARE Dental Program (TDP). Members of the Selected Reserve and Individual Ready Reserve are eligible to enroll in the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP). TRICARE has partnered with the United Concordia Company for enrollment, claims processing, and customer service. The table above provides a summary of monthly premium costs. Additional information regarding TRICARE can be found in Chapter 3 and online at www.tricare.mil . 2–6. EDUCATION BENEFITS. Members of the Guard and Reserve may be eligible to receive educational benefits under one of two current programs: the Post-9/11 GI Bill or the Montgomery GI Bill — Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR). The specific eligibility criteria and benefit amounts vary between programs. Generally, each program provides up to 36 months of education benefits which may be used during the period of service or for a minimum of ten years subsequent to discharge.
