The Volks signed a 7-year lease on the entire facility with the intention of using a majority of the space for VPC’s finished goods (70 percent) and the remaining area for Paxit, which has already grown to occupy the remaining 30 percent. The warehouse has been renovated and can safely secure, store, process, and ship valuable customer inventory. Volk says Paxit has also invested in technolo- gies to seamlessly integrate with e-commerce platforms and the company has a staff of close to 20 full-time work- ers, with the ability to bring on more when needed. Finding labor was not the issue it has become in so many other parts of the country. Paxit’s facility in Sanford is far enough from Portland so it doesn’t compete for its labor. And because Sanford is an industrial town that had been in an economic downturn for the last decade or so, it has a workforce willing and able to do the work needed to make Paxit successful. “We haven’t had too hard of a time hiring people,” says Volk. “We started by hiring people in the local community and using some temporary workers, many of whom be- came permanent employees once we had more projects for them.
