Survey: Most Packagers Switching To Sustainable Packaging Design The vast majority of packaging professionals say that sus- tainability is a key factor in their packaging decisions while 81 percent of organizations have already made changes to their packaging design, according to Chicago, Illinois based R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company (RRD). RRD surveyed 300 US based, mid- to senior-level pro- curement, brand marketing and packaging engineering professionals in April and May this year to see how their operations have been impacted by supply chain disrup- tions, inflation and the increased packaging needs driven by online shopping. Sixty-six percent of respondents said they have shift- ed to more sustainable packaging, while 55 percent said recent supply chain disruptions moved their companies closer to their carbon emissions goals compared to further away. “Brands continue to use less material and are turning to recycled materials – both of which are helping them move toward more sustainable packaging,” said Lisa Pru- ett, President of RRD Packaging Solutions. “Due to limit- ed supply of virgin fiber, now is an excellent time to con- duct a structural design engineering review. We often see this due diligence translates into material usage savings through the use of lighter weight paperboard materials as well as a smaller packaging footprint.” Current challenges have forced organizations to repri- oritize packaging materials (68 percent), budget (52 per- cent), packaging design and aesthetics (49 percent), and sustainability goals (45 percent), the survey found. Additionally, nine out of 10 respondents indicated that recent disruptions to the global supply chain have caused their organization to change how packaging is sourced; including: • 62 percent that have moved to more diversification of suppliers • 42 percent who have outsourced manufacturing/fulfill- ment • 39 percent consolidated with fewer suppliers
