The Luna Light V8I2

PROUD TO BE A HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION Luna Community College is proud to be recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education. Institutions receive this designation when at least 25% of their full-time equivalent undergraduate enrollment is Hispanic. At Luna, we are honored to serve a student population that reflects the rich cultural heritage of our region. Sept 08, 2025

As an HSI, Luna embraces its role in expanding access to higher education, supporting student success, and strengthening the communities we serve. Our commit- ment goes beyond numbers, it is about creating oppor- tunities, celebrating traditions, and ensuring that every student feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to achieve their goals. National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week offers a chance to recognize the essential role HSIs play in shaping the future of higher education across the country. For Luna, it is also a moment to celebrate our students, families, and community partners who make this designation possible and meaningful.

National Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 – October 15

Honoring Hispanic Heritage Maximiliano Luna, our college’s namesake, was a Hispanic officer in the Rough Riders, the famous volunteer cavalry unit that fought during the Spanish–American War in 1898. As one of the few Hispanic officers, his leadership and bravery made New Mexico proud. Today, the Luna Rough Riders honor his legacy — reminding us that courage, service, and pride in our heritage define who we are.
