LEGENDS TURNED LEADERS Sept 26, 2025

Two record-setting athletes have come full circle at Luna Community College—this time not as players, but as coaches. Angelica Ortiz and Elisha Velasquez, once teammates on the field, now dedicate themselves to mentoring the next generation of Rough Riders. Their stories are proof that leadership, resilience, and passion can turn athletes into lifelong role models. Ortiz transferred to Luna after a year away from the game, quickly making her mark. She earned Honorable Mention All-Region as a freshman before setting the NJCAA all-time record for home runs in a season with 41 her sophomore year. She was named Region 9 Play - er of the Year and a First Team All-American. Now, as a coach, Ortiz works with catchers and outfielders, inspiring athletes with her discipline and example. Velasquez arrived at Luna as a last-minute walk-on and turned that opportunity into something extraordinary. By her sophomore year, she had set multiple school pitching records—including strikeouts, complete games, wins, and shutouts—while finishing ranked sixth nationally and earning All-Conference Region 9 honors. Today, she works with Luna’s pitchers on tech- nical skills, strategy, and game management, while also serving as a Resident Advisor in student housing. Together, Ortiz and Velasquez prove that dedication and resilience can turn players into role models, and their presence continues to shape the future of Luna Softball.
