Welcome to Scholar Zone Extended Learning!
This guide is designed to introduce you to the materials and practices you’ll be using with scholars in Scholar Zone Extended Learning for Math. You’ll find a Planning and Pacing Guide that shows what is included in each of the math sessions. This guide will help you prepare ahead for your time with scholars. You’ll also find an Answer Key to help you check scholars’ work. What’s Inside the Student Books Student Content The student handbook has selections from Guided Reading Short Reads and Scholastic’s ScienceSpin magazine that are used to build knowledge and vocabulary. A math focus is correlated for each selection. The handbook includes math practice pages that will help children develop and practice their grade-level math skills. And there are Just for Fun pages, as well. Teacher Notes Each session’s Teacher notes provide suggestions for introducing instruction, assigning work, and reviewing work. Discussion questions help engage children with texts. Teacher notes will help guide you, and then you may provide further support depending on the needs of your scholars. Suggested Materials • Provide red, green, blue, black, orange, yellow, brown, and purple crayons for children to use for specific activities. • If available, provide base ten blocks (hundreds, tens, and ones) for working with place value. • If available, provide counters or connecting cubes to use for addition or subtraction.

Welcome to Scholar Zone Extended Learning! (continued)
Overview of Session Types: Grade 2, Volume 3 Math Time
Each Guided Reading Short Reads selection introduces an engaging topic that provides context for math work.
Each selection is followed by a math practice page that relates to the topic of the selection.
Do the Math!
Do the Math! pages reinforce and give practice in grade-level math skills.
Math and Science Time
Scholastic’s ScienceSpin articles give children opportunities to read STEM topics to build background knowledge and skills. Each article is followed by a math practice page that relates to the topic of the article.
Do the Math! Additional Practice
Additional Do the Math! pages use varied formats to reinforce various grade-level skills.
Catalog Fun
Pages from a catalog allow children to see how numbers are used there.
Just for Fun
Activities are designed to engage children in other math- related activities.

Supporting Children’s Math Work
As children engage in math work, ask them to explain their thinking. Provide coaching as needed for areas that challenge children, referring to any supports on the pages. Help children strategically think through problems rather than just giving answers. Consult the Answer Key provided, if you need to find correct answers. Coaching Strategies If a child accurately solves problems or completes tasks, say: • Great work! • How did you figure that out? • Can you show the work you did to figure out this problem? If a child appears to be confused or challenged, say: • Let’s solve it together. Begin by showing how you get started, thinking aloud about the steps you are taking. Ask: What should we do next? • Let’s see how you can use the information here to help with this. See if you can show the child how to use it to apply to problems he or she needs help with.
If a child comes up with incorrect responses, say: • Take another look at this one. • See if you can find your error. I’ll help if needed. • This one is not correct. Let’s work together to correct it.

Planning and Pacing
Each session may be accomplished in one day. If a session takes longer, just complete it the next day. Pacing is flexible, and you may adapt it to meet your needs. Planning and Pacing Guide: Grade 2, Volume 3
