on revenue of only 821 million. It earned another 225 million euros in the first half of this year, de- spite the outbreak of war. Mondi also has three much smaller plants in Rus- sia that are not affiliated to Syktyvkar and not part of Friday’s deal with Augment Investments, it said. It plans to divest those as well after it explored all options for its interests in Russia following the Ukraine war. Many Western companies have suspended Rus- sian operations or left the country completely fol- lowing Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which has complicated doing business there. Expecting Approval The deal is conditional on approval by the Rus- sian government and Mondi shareholders, who will receive a dividend from the proceeds, the company said. It is expected to close in the second half of 2022, Mondi said. Mondi’s Syktyvkar, a pulp, packaging paper and uncoated fine paper mill located in the capital of the Komi Republic, employs about 4,500 people and generated revenues of more than 821 million euros ($845 million) last year.

The global flexible packaging market was valued at $68.5 billion in 2021, and is projected to reach $102.8 billion by 2031, growing at a Compound An- nual Growth Rate of 4.2 percent from 2022 to 2031, according to a new report. Meeting Demand “The high demand for flexible packaging from food and beverages industry owing to change in lifestyles as well as increased consumer aware- ness regarding health and hygiene, particularly in emerging economies such as China and India, will fuel the market growth during the forecast period,” said Eswara Prasad, Manager, chemical and materi- als, Allied Market Research, the company that pro- duced the report. “Moreover, the demand for flex- ible packaging is growing faster due to growing trends like e-commerce, digital printing, and sus- tainability, which is anticipated to boost the market growth.” The market for flexible packaging is experiencing growth due to the rise in demand for snack and convenience foods in single-serving or small-serv- ing sizes, according to the report.

Graphic Packaging Replaces Plastic With Paperboard Fiber-based consumer packaging producer Graph- ic Packaging International has launched its KeelClip packaging solution in the United States with the in- stallation of a KeelClip 1600 multipacking machine at Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages’ Elmsford, New York, production facility. The equipment — the first to be installed in the United States following an expansion throughout Europe — is a sustainable packaging system for multipacks of cans. The solution uses fiber-based packaging for can multipacks, eliminating the need for plastic rings and shrink wrap. It is estimated that KeelClip technology saved more than 3 million pounds of plastic in 2021 alone, and has been used with more than 550 million packs worldwide. Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages, the local Coca-Cola bottler for the northeastern United States Pennsyl- vania, New Jersey, and New York markets, is utiliz- ing KeelClip technology to improve sustainability across its entire distribution footprint. The instal- lation of the KeelClip 1600 machinery means the sustainable fiber-based packaging solution can be supplied to markets in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Delaware. This transition will reportedly remove 75,000 pounds of plastic packaging per year from the supply chain for ap- proximately 3.1 million cases. Avery Dennison Enables Rigid Plastic Recycling Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials has introduced an innovation that reportedly ex- tends the benefits of CleanFlake technology to its core film portfolio, combining with our HDPE recy- cling compatibility. With the next generation AD CleanFlake Portfo- lio, Avery Dennison says it will become the first label manufacturer to enable rigid plastic recycling across its film portfolio, providing brands and con- verters solutions that support recycling processes without compromising performance to meet sus- tainability goals. AD CleanFlake technology is recognized by the Association of Plastic Recyclers, European PET Bot- tle Platform and Recyclass, for enabling recycling by working with the rigid plastic recycling process- es to either remove cleanly (PET) or stay with the package (HDPE), resulting in good quality flakes, the conservation of virgin resources, and less land- fill waste.

FlexStor Resigns Sleeves To Address Supply Chain Issues Covid steel supply woes have driven a cost reduc- tion redesign for the FlexStor sleeve storage system. The new system “FlexStor VII” is the seventh itera- tion of design improvements since the system was first developed in 2006 and provided to Flexo Trans- parent in Buffalo, New York. CP Flexible packaging now has three systems at that plant with a total sleeve storage capacity of ap- proximatley 2100 sleeves. As an added bonus, the newly designed, lower cost FLEXSTOR VII system, now allows for almost 20 percent additional capacity in the same floor space, that’s right storage for approximately 2,500 sleeves. Overhauling A System The company’s engineers have found that in most flexographic press operations, approximately 50 percent of the sleeves are less than 22 inch (550 mm) repeat. Therefore, dedicated, narrower, rack designs have been developed for all sleeves smaller in repeat than 22 inches (550 mm) repeat. Rather than 6 racks per overhead rail bay, 7 can now be installed. All new racks are retrofittable to existing FLEXSTOR installations. The overhead rail system supports the individual racks on rollers to allow side to side motion allow- ing the aisle to be located where the operator wants to access the sleeves. Parkside Shortlisted For FIA Awards Sustainable, flexible packaging company Parkside, Normanton, UK, has been shortlisted for two Flexo- graphic Industry Association UK’s (FIAUK) awards for its environmentally friendly products. The company’s paper, recyclable flexible packing for frozen food created for Iceland’s Northcoast range of frozen seafood has been selected in the technical innovation category. The packaging rep- resents the first successful application of paper flex- ible packaging on frozen seafood, according to the company. Parkside is also shortlisted for packaging collab- oration with sustainable food brand Riverford Or- ganics, which enabled the company to move away from conventional plastic-based packaging. Riverford has now switched all its packaging to flexible paper recyclable and compostable pulp punnets for soft fruits and mushrooms.

Smurfit’s Circular Approach To Benefit Community The Smurfit Kappa paper mill in Nettingsdorf, Austria, has launched a sustainable district heating project that will benefit 20,000 homes across three communities when completed. The project will cap- ture excess heat generated from the Nettingsdorf paper mill to provide heating for local homes, busi- nesses and schools. Civil works have commenced on the project with the first trenches excavated and pipes laid in June. The central heat distribution building and equip- ment will be erected in the coming months and it is planned that a local elementary school and the kin- dergarten in Nettingsdorf will be the first premises to benefit from the scheme early next year. This follows a recent €134 million program at in- vestment at the Nettingsdorf mill, which included the installation of a new recovery boiler that allows the recovery of biomass generated in paper pulp production. This not only boosted energy optimiza- tion but cut CO2 emissions by 40,000 tons annually. Once fully operational, the new central heating network will provide heating to households in the neighboring villages of Kremsdorf, Haid and Ans- felden and replace the fossil fuels previously used. The production process will generate up to 25 MW of heat that will help save approximately 21,000 tons of CO2. Smurfit Kappa has reportedly had success with a similar project operated from its Pitea paper mill in Sweden which has been converting excess heat into central heating for domestic and business premises in the local community for more than 40 years. Labelink Acquires Label Factory, Taylor Label Labelink, a Canadian label and packaging manu- facturer, has acquired Taylor Label and The Label Factory, two trade-only label printers. Respectively located in Brampton and George- town, the two businesses strengthen Labelink’s presence in Ontario and will accelerate Labelink’s plan to grow its footprint in Western Canada, ac- cording to the company. Since 1992 Taylor Label has served Canadian busi- nesses through an extended network of trade bro- kers. The Label Factory was founded in 1985 and owned by Alex Medd and Carl Minor since 1994. Taylor Label and The Label Factory will continue serving existing and new customers, operating un- der the Labelink name.

Obituary The Phoenix Challenge Founda- tion mourns the loss of a pivotal figure in education and an inspi- ration to many who are devoted to the progress of young students and their success. Diann Teague

“the” inspiration behind the Phoenix Challenge. She passed on July 13, 2022 surrounded by family. Before the Phoenix Challenge Foundation (PCF) was launched, Teague took the lead in establishing the original Flexo High School Skills Competition for flexography skill, technical education and math- ematics. Once the seed was planted she went on and pursued the first High School Skills program, which was initiated in 1997. Providing A Future Today the Phoenix Challenge Foundation en- compasses High School Skills Competition and the 15-year-old College Competition. It has exposed more than 5,000 students to flexo technology, awarded more than $60K in scholarships and has witnessed several hundred young adults make their way into careers across the entire flexo and pack- age printing industries. The Phoenix Challenge Foundation has been proud to honor Excellence of Education through the Diann Teague Award, presented to her first in 2007. Since then, this award is presented to the in- structor who guides the winning High School Skills competition team each year, recognizing their own excellence in education. This award has been pre- sented at the High School Skills Competition each year since 2008. With the coordination and support from Ron & Katherine Harper, founders of Harper Corporation; and the Flexographic Technical Association (FFTA), the Phoenix Challenge Foundation’s inception was a continuation of Teague’s legacy. The Phoe- nix Challenge Foundation will continue to expand and grow, building upon its mission of “Developing tomorrow’s workforce” with the heritage of Diann Teague as inspiration.
