FALL 2025
OUR AREA IS GROWING
It’s hard to believe with all the negative press about the city at least for our UES area. You must have noticed all the new apartment building construction happening. These buildings are all thirty plus stories high meaning there are hundreds if not thousands of new units becoming available. The purchase or rental prices are astronomical and yet the building is ongoing. Obviously, many think there is a future for the city. I am happy where the practice is located. Fortunately, for me Mickey Dee’s refused to sell preventing a skyscraper being constructed across the street from us. We have the big windows, a clear view of Third Avenue and most importantly we can see the sky. At night I see lights on in these new buildings so people are moving in but there are still enough low-rise brownstones in Yorkville so we are still a Ville within a City. You realize the city’s population must be trending older since there are more and more medical facilities popping up around us. It’s like doctor central within just a few blocks. The area continues to change and is vastly different than when I opened in 2007. It’s not better or worse just different and as in life it will continue to change. As for dentistry the technology has changed but the basics are still the same. For me it’s not about the teeth but about the patient. You want
to be seen on time, not experience any discomfort, have your questions and concerns answered and be treated as a person not a widget. One thing that has changed is when going to the post office on 85th Street it’s now almost impossible to get stamps for first class postage. Seems snail mail is definitely dying with email conquering all. But we like to contact you personally by sending birthday cards, congratulation cards, referral gift cards, thank you cards in addition to this newsletter and our online and external marketing. We appreciate the referrals you give us and for us the best compliment you can give is the referral of family members, loved ones, significant others or friends and acquaintances. The good news for the vast majority of you; once you have been dentally restored to health all you need is your biyearly cleanings and with you doing your part you’ll be good to go with no dental issues. I’ll be here at The House of Teeth to take care of your dental needs and see how you’re doing. Hoping you all had a great summer vacation and wishing you continued health and happiness.

FALL IS UPON US
Summer’s over and did you have a nice trip? Hopefully you got out of the pressure cooker for at least a couple of days. Going away is a must for New Yorkers to maintain their sanity. As for me Fall it’s already here. The next several weeks is our version of San Diego. San Diego you say? There the temperature is always around 72 degrees year-round. So, for So Cal inhabitants it’s the norm but for us it’s a brief respite before getting out the heavy gear. Hats, scarfs, winter jackets in your closet are jumping for joy. They’ll soon be released from their seven-month confinement. Since you only have a handful of weekends to enjoy the mild weather it’s time to get out and about outside before your confinement begins. Here are some ideas to consider: There are now helicopter tours of Manhattan for the adventurous. See the city and the fall plumage from the air. If you’ve never been in a helicopter, it’s a treat. Unlike airplanes you are at a level where you can really see things from a new and interesting perspective. It’s a one and done. My experience occurred in Washington, D.C., in 1980. Georgetown University wanted an intro to their filmed content and lucky me got to do it. Obviously, Washington, D.C., is a highly restricted air space. A Bell Jet Police Helicopter was used with me hanging out the door and filming coming in over the Potomac across Key Bridge onto the campus. Telling the pilots I was leaving the area after eight years at Georgetown University, they gave me the definitive DC tour. We flew and hovered over the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and CIA Headquarters in Langley. It’s been 45 years and I still remember it for the unique view.
For the less adventurous there are the Hudson Cruise lines to Bear Mountain where you can view the changing of the colors in a relaxing and sedate setting. Boat rides can be quite enjoyable if the weather cooperates and the crowds are not overwhelming. There is the park which is Central for roller skating, rowing, biking and strolling. I like rowing in the lake especially if someone else is doing the rowing. You have the Bronx Zoo where all the animals are jumping up and down for you. Probably not. Also in the area is the Botanical Gardens for a leisurely stroll within the plants. Comic Con is coming to the Javits Center for three days on October 9th if that is your thing. Then there are the annual Columbus Day and Village Halloween parades to observe or be a part of. If the Broadway theatre is your thing at least now for an evening performance you do not have to carry your jacket to your seat which is already quite tight. Guess those humans in the early 1920s were a lot smaller. Dining outdoors at night can be enjoyable in the more outlying areas of the city where it is generally less hectic. The other nice part is as the temperature declines so does the mosquito population always a downer when trying to enjoy your outdoor meal. Of course, if you’re new to New York there’s the tourist standbys, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Circle Line, Governor’s Island, Top of the Rock and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Best of all if you’re out and about you’re moving your body and that’s always a good thing.

WHAT I’M READING NOW
I get enjoyment through reading. It’s also a time machine. You can read books written centuries ago and in a way be back in time with the author. I try to read about an hour each night before going to bed. It relaxes me and probably interacts with my subconscious. Some people read multiple books at the same time but I’m a linear reader starting and finishing one book at a time. I’m a fast reader and read approximately one book every five to ten days. Here’s some upcoming and recently read books. • “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien on the Vietnam War • “The Undiscovered Country” by Paul Andrew Hutton on the American West • “The Secrets of Secrets” by Dan Brown continuing the saga of Robert Landon, symbologist • “A Death in Berlin” by Simon Scarrow about Nazis causing havoc in Berlin in the 1940s • “King of Kings” by Scott Anderson about the fall of the Shah of Iran
I have Netflix, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Apple Plus, HBO Max and Amazon Prime with so many stations and so little to watch truly upsetting but very true.
Finally, as you get older if you like your brain and you are NOT interested in meeting Mr. Alzheimer you must read. Like exercising your muscles, you have to exercise your brain. You could also do crossword puzzles or learn a new language but staring at the phone, computer or TV is not going to cut it. Reading is the most intimate conversation between two strangers and forces your mind to continually interact and create. I find it fulfilling and enjoyable.
STRONG FOUNDATIONS Just like the Flintstones who lived in Bedrock, Manhattan is situated on bedrock. Has to be when you see the tall skyscrapers all around us. For the buildings to stand and withstand the elements they need to be situated on a strong foundation no matter how beautiful their superstructure. the gingival sulcus and needs to be kept clean. You obviously brush your teeth but the key question is do you floss.
Like all of life it’s sometimes unfair. There are individuals who never floss and never have any tooth retention problems but for most of us if you don’t floss, eventually, you will be bitten. Bite, you say? How can my gums bite me? You need to clean the sulcus around your teeth on a daily basis. This is done by using dental floss that little thread which actually is still reasonably priced. Everyday you place the floss between your teeth and by doing so remove any build-up that has occurred there. Your teeth are cubes or squares and when you brush you can clean the top, back and tops of your teeth. However, you are unable to get in between them and this is where dental floss is your tooth’s friend. All the bacteria in your mouth are anaerobic meaning living without oxygen. The air we
breath only contains 20% oxygen so oxygen concentration in your mouth is low. Anaerobic bacteria like to grow in areas without oxygen, which are warm, and without light. Sounds like your mouth. Also like you they like food and where is food placed in your mouth. So, there’s no air, it’s warm, dark with a ready food supply so for anaerobic bacteria it’s time to party hardy. When you brush your teeth, you are bringing air into your mouth and when you floss you are bringing air in between your teeth so for the bacteria you’re a party pooper. Good for you but not for them and most importantly good for your teeth. If you keep your teeth healthy and clean, you’ll have a strong foundation and your teeth will be serving you throughout your lifetime.
This same concept applies to your teeth. You can be cavity free with a pleasing smile and look but if your foundation is not strong, your teeth will be moving and eventually departing. It’s not that hard to maintain a strong foundation for all it takes is a little effort on your part. For most of us we have adequate bone in our upper and lower jaws. The bone is the supporting mechanism for your teeth. Your teeth are attached to you by ligaments that grow out of the roots of the teeth into your upper and lower jaw bones. In a healthy environment your teeth reside in your mouth with a little cuff of two to three millimeters surrounding them. This cuff is called

DINERS, DRIVE IN’S AND BARS What’s opening in our neck of the woods? Well, certainly no drive ins especially with the continual lack of parking. But, diners here’s two that are opening now.
Café Maud on Second Avenue and 85th Street. This is a haunted location, for every restaurant or bar that opens here closes but this is a keeper. It’s a second location to their East Village Café which has been going strong. The other night there was a long line to get in. Seems they have a strong social media following. Slightly further down the avenue at 84th Street Pure Vida is opening. This is an offshoot of the Pure Vida from Miami which also has a strong following. Serving healthy fare on the ground floor of the new skyscraper next to the Q line, it provides another healthy option.
