FALL IS UPON US
Summer’s over and did you have a nice trip? Hopefully you got out of the pressure cooker for at least a couple of days. Going away is a must for New Yorkers to maintain their sanity. As for me Fall it’s already here. The next several weeks is our version of San Diego. San Diego you say? There the temperature is always around 72 degrees year-round. So, for So Cal inhabitants it’s the norm but for us it’s a brief respite before getting out the heavy gear. Hats, scarfs, winter jackets in your closet are jumping for joy. They’ll soon be released from their seven-month confinement. Since you only have a handful of weekends to enjoy the mild weather it’s time to get out and about outside before your confinement begins. Here are some ideas to consider: There are now helicopter tours of Manhattan for the adventurous. See the city and the fall plumage from the air. If you’ve never been in a helicopter, it’s a treat. Unlike airplanes you are at a level where you can really see things from a new and interesting perspective. It’s a one and done. My experience occurred in Washington, D.C., in 1980. Georgetown University wanted an intro to their filmed content and lucky me got to do it. Obviously, Washington, D.C., is a highly restricted air space. A Bell Jet Police Helicopter was used with me hanging out the door and filming coming in over the Potomac across Key Bridge onto the campus. Telling the pilots I was leaving the area after eight years at Georgetown University, they gave me the definitive DC tour. We flew and hovered over the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and CIA Headquarters in Langley. It’s been 45 years and I still remember it for the unique view.
For the less adventurous there are the Hudson Cruise lines to Bear Mountain where you can view the changing of the colors in a relaxing and sedate setting. Boat rides can be quite enjoyable if the weather cooperates and the crowds are not overwhelming. There is the park which is Central for roller skating, rowing, biking and strolling. I like rowing in the lake especially if someone else is doing the rowing. You have the Bronx Zoo where all the animals are jumping up and down for you. Probably not. Also in the area is the Botanical Gardens for a leisurely stroll within the plants. Comic Con is coming to the Javits Center for three days on October 9th if that is your thing. Then there are the annual Columbus Day and Village Halloween parades to observe or be a part of. If the Broadway theatre is your thing at least now for an evening performance you do not have to carry your jacket to your seat which is already quite tight. Guess those humans in the early 1920s were a lot smaller. Dining outdoors at night can be enjoyable in the more outlying areas of the city where it is generally less hectic. The other nice part is as the temperature declines so does the mosquito population always a downer when trying to enjoy your outdoor meal. Of course, if you’re new to New York there’s the tourist standbys, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Circle Line, Governor’s Island, Top of the Rock and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Best of all if you’re out and about you’re moving your body and that’s always a good thing.
