WHAT I’M READING NOW

I get enjoyment through reading. It’s also a time machine. You can read books written centuries ago and in a way be back in time with the author. I try to read about an hour each night before going to bed. It relaxes me and probably interacts with my subconscious. Some people read multiple books at the same time but I’m a linear reader starting and finishing one book at a time. I’m a fast reader and read approximately one book every five to ten days. Here’s some upcoming and recently read books. • “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien on the Vietnam War • “The Undiscovered Country” by Paul Andrew Hutton on the American West • “The Secrets of Secrets” by Dan Brown continuing the saga of Robert Landon, symbologist • “A Death in Berlin” by Simon Scarrow about Nazis causing havoc in Berlin in the 1940s • “King of Kings” by Scott Anderson about the fall of the Shah of Iran

I have Netflix, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Apple Plus, HBO Max and Amazon Prime with so many stations and so little to watch truly upsetting but very true.

Finally, as you get older if you like your brain and you are NOT interested in meeting Mr. Alzheimer you must read. Like exercising your muscles, you have to exercise your brain. You could also do crossword puzzles or learn a new language but staring at the phone, computer or TV is not going to cut it. Reading is the most intimate conversation between two strangers and forces your mind to continually interact and create. I find it fulfilling and enjoyable.

STRONG FOUNDATIONS Just like the Flintstones who lived in Bedrock, Manhattan is situated on bedrock. Has to be when you see the tall skyscrapers all around us. For the buildings to stand and withstand the elements they need to be situated on a strong foundation no matter how beautiful their superstructure. the gingival sulcus and needs to be kept clean. You obviously brush your teeth but the key question is do you floss.

Like all of life it’s sometimes unfair. There are individuals who never floss and never have any tooth retention problems but for most of us if you don’t floss, eventually, you will be bitten. Bite, you say? How can my gums bite me? You need to clean the sulcus around your teeth on a daily basis. This is done by using dental floss that little thread which actually is still reasonably priced. Everyday you place the floss between your teeth and by doing so remove any build-up that has occurred there. Your teeth are cubes or squares and when you brush you can clean the top, back and tops of your teeth. However, you are unable to get in between them and this is where dental floss is your tooth’s friend. All the bacteria in your mouth are anaerobic meaning living without oxygen. The air we

breath only contains 20% oxygen so oxygen concentration in your mouth is low. Anaerobic bacteria like to grow in areas without oxygen, which are warm, and without light. Sounds like your mouth. Also like you they like food and where is food placed in your mouth. So, there’s no air, it’s warm, dark with a ready food supply so for anaerobic bacteria it’s time to party hardy. When you brush your teeth, you are bringing air into your mouth and when you floss you are bringing air in between your teeth so for the bacteria you’re a party pooper. Good for you but not for them and most importantly good for your teeth. If you keep your teeth healthy and clean, you’ll have a strong foundation and your teeth will be serving you throughout your lifetime.

This same concept applies to your teeth. You can be cavity free with a pleasing smile and look but if your foundation is not strong, your teeth will be moving and eventually departing. It’s not that hard to maintain a strong foundation for all it takes is a little effort on your part. For most of us we have adequate bone in our upper and lower jaws. The bone is the supporting mechanism for your teeth. Your teeth are attached to you by ligaments that grow out of the roots of the teeth into your upper and lower jaw bones. In a healthy environment your teeth reside in your mouth with a little cuff of two to three millimeters surrounding them. This cuff is called
