CURRICULUM to Support Literacy Instruction

Scholastic publishes research-based print and digital literacy solutions that support both whole-class and small-group instruction as well as independent learning, with the ultimate goal of helping every student to become a lifelong reader, writer, and thinker. Developed in conjunction with leading authors, practitioners, and researchers in the fields of guided reading, vocabulary, leveled texts, writing, and more, our programs reflect and support best practices in literacy instruction. Our authentic texts help each student find the right book at the right time in their literacy journey. And our programs include culturally relevant texts so students can make deep and meaningful connections to their lives in and outside of school.

COMPREHENSIVE LITERACY PROGRAM

Scholastic Literacy is our new comprehensive literacy curriculum for Grades K–6. This complete program features standards-aligned instruction, authentic texts, integrated writing, innovative digital resources, professional learning, and family engagement resources.

SUPPLEMENTAL READING AND WRITING PROGRAMS

Featuring more than 6,200 leveled texts, Scholastic Leveled Book Room 4.0 is a whole-school solution for small-group instruction. Our digital Accelerator tool helps educators create custom text sets and access teaching cards for every title to plan lessons and scaffold instruction.

Scholastic Guided Reading Programs deliver high-quality, authentic leveled texts and instruction to help all students become strategic and independent readers. Guided Reading programs are available in a wide variety of formats: fiction and nonfiction, content areas, Spanish, text types, and short reads. Our Next Step Guided Reading Assessment enables teachers to make data-driven instructional decisions to move students toward increasingly complex texts.

Scholastic EDGE is an in-class, inclusive approach that helps close the achievement gap for students reading 6 to 24 months behind grade level. EDGE motivates readers in small groups and offers increasingly challenging, age-appropriate leveled texts to ensure that students grow as readers.

Scholastic’s Collections and Classroom Libraries create a rich literacy environment with contemporary favorites, treasured classics, and culturally responsive and bilingual titles. Our collections include The 7 Strengths Library, The Byron Garrett Social-Emotional Learning Collection, Phyllis C. Hunter Libraries, and many more. And Scholastic can always customize a collection to fit the needs of your students and school community.

TraitsWriting is a revolutionary writing program fromRuth Culham that helps every student become a capable, confident writer. Built on the cornerstones of writing practices—writing process, writing workshop, and writing traits— Traits Writing can be used throughout the school year. Also from Ruth Culham, Trait Crate offers writing lessons and extension activities that help students prewrite, draft, and edit their writing.

Conventions and Craft offers a year’s worth of instruction in the language skills that writers need most—grammar, sentence structure, punctuation and capitalization, word knowledge, and editing. One convention is covered each week in five micro-workshops that take just 10 minutes a day.

SUMMER AND EXTENDED DAY LEARNING

My Books Summer is a series of high-interest fiction and nonfiction take-home book packs that encourage reading at home.

Developed with reading and writing expert PamAllyn, LitCamp and LitCamp en español combine innovative research-based reading and writing lessons and a focus on social-emotional learning with an engaging summer camp approach.

Also from Pam Allyn, LitLeague is an exciting new after-school, extended- day, or enrichment program that provides a joyous and interactive experience for young readers. LitLeague creates an engaging learning environment with read-alouds, group discussions, independent reading, writing activities, games, songs, and more.

BellXcell After School Program is a full-day immersive learning experience that combines academic instruction with fun hands-on enrichment activities, field trips, mentorships, and community service projects.

EARLY CHILDHOOD

Cozy Corner ensures that students in PreK have a strong foundation for future reading success. This early language and literacy program was designed around proven language and literacy skills including developing narrative skills, vocabulary, letter knowledge, phonological sensitivity, and print motivation.

Developed with Dr. Adria Klein, Scholastic EDGE for PreK helps students build a deeper understanding of language, letters, and how books work. The program encourages students who are ready to read and develops the skills they will need for kindergarten.

DIGITAL SOLUTIONS

Ooka Island develops strong foundational reading skills with phonemic awareness and phonological activities. On Ooka Island , all children in Grades PreK–2 learn to read effortlessly and discover the joy of fluent reading.

Scholastic Literacy Pro is the essential digital classroom management tool for independent reading in Grades K–6. With Literacy Pro , students experience purposeful reading through a personalized recommendation of print and digital titles.

Developed in conjunction with Dr. Elfrieda Hiebert, Scholastic W.O.R.D. supercharges vocabulary acquisition and deepens comprehension through fun, research-based gameplay for students in Grades K–5. By mastering the 2,500 word families that make up 90% of texts, all students will be better prepared for reading.

BookFlix 2.0 includes more than 135 animated stories from Weston Woods paired with best-selling nonfiction Scholastic ebooks. BookFlix ’s fiction and nonfiction pairings strengthen early literacy skills while exposing readers in Grades PreK–3 to real-world concepts.

Additionally, our partnerships with schools, public libraries, pediatricians, and community-based organizations put high-quality books and literacy resources directly into the hands of all families and their children.

TAKE-HOME FAMILY RESOURCES

Designed to prepare students for success in kindergarten and throughout their education, this English and Spanish bilingual kit comes packed with more than 80 super-fun activities for families to do with their children in preparation for school. School Readiness Kits help children build essential foundational skills such as phonological awareness and early comprehension, identifying feelings and emotions, and learning numbers and how to count. Providing access to books at home reinforces key learning skills, increases year-round independent reading, builds home libraries, and encourages all children to become lifelong learners. Each My Books Every Day thematic set includes five high-interest books, one student journal, one family guide, and one grade-level teaching guide. Through a series of workshops, Scholastic Literacy Events help families learn to engage their children with motivating and fun literacy activities. Featuring videos (with Spanish subtitles), hands-on activities, and a facilitator’s guide, these workshops provide excellent strategies for getting involved in children’s literacy growth.

Read and Rise provides families with hands-on strategies for building literacy at home while reinforcing the fact that parents are their child’s first and most important teacher. The program builds text-rich environments at home by providing take-home books and parent resources for families who participate.
