Wales is a cornerstone of UK defence operations, through provision of workforce skills - as well as the availability of secure sites and airspace. More recently, we’ve added new strengths to our infrastructure. These include training, systems and defence technologies. Around 100 companies in Wales are involved in creating defence applications such as software, biometrics, optical design and imaging. One example is Airbus Defence and Space. From its base in Newport, the company is developing defence communication and information systems using local expertise and ingenuity. Working in South East Wales, with General Dynamics, Axiom and TT Electronics nearby, these companies have been able to access a highly skilled workforce – as well as the MOD’s procurement base, just a short drive away in Bristol.

Such an active Aerospace and Defence sector provides a ready market for businesses such as Qioptiq, which designs and manufactures night vision systems for the MOD. Another is Babcock, which maintains the RAF fast-jet training fleet at RAF Valley on Anglesey, and QinetiQ, experts in defence, aerospace and security. In North East Wales, DECA have recently been awarded a global repair hub, undertaking MRO and upgrades for the F-35 avionic and aircraft components, whilst Raytheon UK have opened a new facility to continue their work on the RAF Shadow fleets. BAE Systems have operations at Glascoed and RAF Valley on Anglesey.

Wales has several sites suitable for RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) and T & E (Test and Evaluation/verification) of space system hardware, materials and components, especially those with hazardous products, or the potential for disruptive emissions. MOD Pendine lies in South Carmarthenshire, at the western end of the Loughor estuary. The site has several different areas, each with individual capabilities. The shoreline has been used in the past for aircraft landing training sorties, while the large Sea Danger Area stretches into Carmarthen Bay. It also has an Air Danger Area which extends up to 23,000ft. The facilities mostly consist of prepared, safe areas with permanent buildings and power supplies. The Long Test Track (LTT) facility, suitable for high-speed dynamic trials, is unique in the UK. The eastern end of the range is most suitable for space related use.

Radnor Range is a UK MoD accredited independent test house offering a unique blend of capabilities to conduct assessment and trials at the range complex or other facilities. Radnor conducts fully instrumented testing of armoured vehicles (civilian and military), armoured materials and fully engineered armoured structures to all international test standards and supports the flying of drones and counter-drone activity. Aberporth Range , located on the west coast of Wales, provides a controlled safe environment for the release of land, air and sea-launched missile firings as well as instrumentation verification, passive and active IR/RF jamming, and the ability to manage supersonic trials activity in its 7,500km² of sanitised airspace from surface to unlimited altitude. The Range has a fully-instrumented 3D area for T & E, and space for training activities. It provides both live and virtual environments, real-time data, and

Wales is a major centre for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO); 20% of the UK’s activity is managed here, and the country punches well above its weight, despite having just 5% of the UK’s population. The MRO sector continues to grow in Wales, along with the expertise of its workforce, we currently have nearly 50 MRO companies based in Wales. GE Aviation is the world MRO base for the GE90 engine, used in the twin-engine wide- body Boeing 777, one of the most powerful engines certified for civil aircraft. In addition, GE handles the GP7000, which was developed by The Engine Alliance, a joint venture between GE and Pratt & Whitney. This powers the Airbus A380 and the CFM56 family of engines – developed by CFM, which is the world’s most popular aircraft engine. The business occupies a workshop space of

1 million square feet and its customer base covers 90+ operators, from all around the world. The Bro Tathan Enterprise Zone, which can trace its aviation history back to 1938, continues to be a major centre for Aerospace and Defence. It currently has several tenants, workshops and hangars, along with a newly surfaced runway. Civilian and military projects work side by side, with works including MRO, non-destructive testing and full-scale manufacturing. Based here are British Airways Engineering, eCube Solutions, (specialising in end-of life aircraft projects) and Caerdav, a fully-approved and certified aviation maintenance, engineering, and technical service group. SPACE WALES Wales is the world’s first Sustainable Space Nation; a nation that uses the unique solutions from space to address the global and national challenges on Earth. We do so in a manner that will deliver a sustainable environment and employment for future generations. To drive forward our ambitions in this sector Aerospace Wales has now established Space Wales www.spacewales.co.uk. We are planning a National Space Observatory that draws together the public, private and academic sector experts to define the challenges and the potential solutions to the management of our part of the planet. As a result, we anticipate being able to better plan the service delivery and environmental mitigations required to protect our future. Our resident optics, sensor, computing and AI skills will all play a significant part in creating solutions, and virtualisation and simulations will help develop wider understanding of the risks we face and the impact of possible solutions. Our Start-ups are thriving: We have a stellar range of launch options with: B2Space’s balloon launched “Rockoon” solution provides low-cost access to Low Earth Observation for small and micro-satellites and launched successfully in the summer of 2022. SmallSpark’s responsive launch systems are simplifying access to Space whilst enabling higher performance systems to be integrated into smaller satellites Space Forge has a programme to develop in-space manufacturing solutions with fully returnable and reusable satellites all being developed in Wales.

Ambitions in Space We already have a lot going on, but we have some wonderful ambitions, for example: Spaceflight Academy’s vision is to be the world’s leading commercial Spaceflight and aeromedical training provider, motivated by a belief that human factor aeromedical issues associated with commercial space travel and tourism for the public are no less important than the technological challenges of sending people into space. Their planned facilities will include a campus building designed to be an impressive gateway attraction for visitors to Spaceport Snowdonia. Port Talbot Space Centre: anchored by the sea-borne launch operator Black Arrow Space Technologies, the space centre is developing plans for a space centre with educational reach-out facilities as well as services for space related businesses.
