Faced with these challenging land characteristics, the architect designed an elevated vaca- tion home – perched on stilts – creating a modern and el- egant atmosphere amidst the Schuylkill’s distinct outdoor scenery. “We wanted to create a refuge for the homeowners to escape the city and a design GREENCASTLE, PA — Winners of the 2016 National Auctioneers Association Marketing Competition, pre- sented in partnership with USA TODAY, were announced at the 67th International Auc- tioneers Conference and Show held in Grand Rapids, MI. that would accent the beauti- ful nature that surrounded them,” said Michael Ryan, principal of Michael Ryan Architects. “The surround- ings of the project also created constraints for us to overcome, but these hurdles ultimately helped to create a house that is both resilient and unique.” Michael Ryan Architects, which has offices in Philadel- phia and Loveladies, NJ, drew inspiration from the prop- erty’s waterfront setting and decided to focus the layout of the residence to correspond with the river. The elevated house presents an expansive view of the surrounding land- scape. The firm saw the three primary spaces – living room, kitchen/dining area, and main bedroom – as a composition of spaces that react to a bend in the river. “Michael Ryan Architects is deserving of this honor for their striking design of this distinctive home,” said Justin Mihalik, AIA, president of AIA-NJ. n Hurley Auctions special- izes in auctions of commercial, farm, residential, hunting preserves, and development real estate as well as busi- ness and estate liquidations of manufacturing and industrial companies, aircraft, medical equipment, farm machinery, antiques, and collectables. n The task of determining winners was given to a panel of marketing and advertising professionals, all of which have backgrounds in brand- ing, promotion, media, public relations and graphic design.
