Celebrating Our Marriage This Valentine’s Day

I love my husband, Jolon, dearly. I first learned of his frugal nature back when we first started dating, and it was this frugality that gave away one of his biggest romantic gestures. I was a sophomore in dental school, and I was walking across campus when I saw Jolon standing by a limo he had rented. I immediately knew what he was up to! Given his frugal nature, there was no way he would spring for a limo unless it was meant to signal a special event that would create a sweet memory for us to cherish later. (Spoiler alert: We still have this tradition!) From there, he whisked me off to Disneyland — a cheap date because we had been gifted passes by our families. It was in front of Cinderella’s castle that my prince asked me to marry him, and I happily said I would. I may have had a suspicion that he was proposing this day, but that didn’t make it any less magical. Jolon and I met in high school, and we began dating in college. We had always been great friends and liked one another, but the timing for us to get together never coordinated with each other’s social interests ... until one day in college it did! I’ve always liked Jolon for his ability to not overcomplicate things. He’s very low-key and down-to- earth. I can count on him to not sweat the small stuff, and it’s easy to have fun with him! I look back fondly on the early days of our relationship and the fun we had together. I still remember the regular dates we would have at a ballroom dance class in the local community. They were taught by this super cute retired couple, probably in their late 70s, named Dee and Fred. This couple was one to emulate. Their love for each other was palpable, second only to their ability to keep things lighthearted.

Jolon and I were married on Dec. 17, 2000, and after 19 years of marriage and two beautiful kids, we’re still crazy about each other. There are little quirks about each of us that drive the other nuts, but that’s also what makes us love and understand each other better. We’re still playful

with one another every day, just like Dee and Fred, and it’s made the past two decades a fun adventure. Jolon is an amazing dad, too, and I’ve loved watching him fulfill that role.

As our relationship and lives have grown together, we’ve been lucky to continue to support each other from afar in our various professional pursuits. There’s this unspoken rule between us that our jobs and career are our individual passions. We give each other the freedom to pursue them fully, knowing full well that each of us has someone in our corner cheering us on.

Because of this and so many other things, I firmly believe that I couldn’t ask for a better valentine! Happy Valentine’s Day, Jo!

I hope you and your sweetheart — or any of the loves in your life — find a way to celebrate love this February and EVERY DAY! 1 –Dr. Jessica Sabo God Bless,
