Our Stories

I ‘m a recent graduate from the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE). I had never heard about PIQE until my son, Jose Sabreda, became a freshman at Steele Canyon High School. We attended a fair where they welcomed all the families and had all the clubs and sports represented. PIQE instructors organized Coffee with the Principal for the parents. I was happy to find out PIQE also offers programs for families in elementary and middle school. I recommended them to my son’s former school district, because it’s never too early to help families feel more prepared and connected in their kids’ education. According to Monica Griego, the local director, the best time to enroll in PIQE classes is when children are in elementary school because parents have more time to take all the classes to help their children thrive in school. But parents like me who joined PIQE in high school can still significantly impact our children’s lives. One of the presentations PIQE offered really caught my attention: The Social Emotional Workshop. Taking the 8-week workshop was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made. It was in Spanish, but that was fine since I am bilingual and a former translator. It taught us how to manage emotions. It gave us a chance to connect with other parents, share our stories, and feel like we’re not alone. There were 20 parents at the class, and everybody was always there, very involved. We built kind of like a little family because we were sharing experiences and grievances and wins. And so it was a really cool time for us.
