San Diego City College student Mario Solis alerted fellow students and community residents on April 22, 1970, that construction crews were bulldozing the land to pave a parking lot for a California Highway Patrol station. Families, children and students created a human chain and successfully stopped the bulldozers.
The community action resulted in the creation of Chicano Park.
Their resistance and persistence were underpinned by the ideology of “Chicanismo. These activists identified as “Chicanos.” They called for solidarity based on a shared cultural heritage along with economic, educational, political equality and justice for their community.
