BRINGING MAGIC TO LIFE How Kate and I Make Christmas Special for our Kids
When you have young kids, it dawns on you that you only get to celebrate a handful of Christmases with them while they still believe in the magic of Santa Claus. Rylan is 7 next month, and Rowan is still 2, which means we are right in the middle of that special time. In order to ensure that these celebrations are special and memorable for our kids, we're going the extra mile to bring the magic to life. Last year, Kate and I bought our first Elf on the Shelf, which Rylan loved. Each night, we placed our elf in a new place for the kids to find. They love the idea that our elf has adventures during the night, and Kate and I enjoy trying, each day, to top our own cleverness. Rowan didn’t really understand the concept, but she loved running around with her brother trying to spot our elf. In addition to Elf on the Shelf, we will take the kids to the zoo and the Grotto to see the light displays, and we will also visit Pittock Mansion to see the incredible Christmas decor. Finally, we plan on taking a train ride on the Polar Express for some hot chocolate, cookies, and a visit from Santa. It’s going to be a busy month! My sister and brother-in-law moved to Portland to be closer to my family, so we plan on celebrating Christmas with them and their dog, Idgie, who the kids are absolutely obsessed with. My sister and brother-in-law are planning on spending all of Christmas day with us, and maybe Christmas Eve as well. The day after, Kate, Rylan, Rowan, and I will be flying to visit Kate’s parents, brother, and sister-in-law in Montana. We plan on staying about a week, which will be great since we don’t get to see this side of the family very much. We'll celebrate Christmas, of course, but we also plan on skiing. Rylan has been skiing before, but his cousins snowboard, so we're planning to offer him a choice this year. Rowan has never been, and it’ll be fun to get her on a pair of skis for the first time. At the office, our team will be holding a white elephant gift exchange, which is one of the best things we do each year. We place a dollar limit, and the goal is to bring the funniest gift you can find. Last year, Kate helped me pick out my white elephant gift, which was a steaming tool used to clean microwaves. The tool is in the shape of an angry woman, and you fill it will water and vinegar. Then, you pop it in the microwave and it steams while it cleans! The gift was really

silly, but, after Kate and I tried it out, I didn’t want to give it away. However, I reluctantly brought “angry momma” to the party hoping to win her back. Unfortunately, I lost her, and the potential for a spotless microwave, to a teammate. If I’m lucky, Kate will put a new microwave steamer in my stocking this year. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year. We will see you soon!
