Marlon A. Lee 1973-2025 City Councilman, Basketball Coach

S mithfield, NC Coun- cilman Marlon A. Lee (Smithfield (NC) Alumni 2004) entered the Chapter Invisible on May 25, 2025. In addition to his civic duties, Brother Lee was the head women’s basketball coach at Clay- ton (NC) High School, where he led the program to a regional title, four regular-season conference championships, and two conference tournament victories. His alma mater, Saint Augustine’s Univer- sity, released a statement recognizing his passing. Born on December 6, 1973, to Alonza Lee and Betty Jean Dublin, Marlon Alonza Lee grew up in the Belmont community of East Smithfield, NC.

Brother Lee graduated from Smithfield-Selma High School (SSS) in 1992, where he played on the Spartans Basketball Team. He attended North Caro- lina A&T State University before transferring to St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC, on a basket- ball scholarship. The 6'9" Lee was a member of the 1997 CIAA Championship Men’s Basketball Team. He graduated in 1999 with a BA degree in business education. After college, he joined the Clayton High School faculty as a math teacher in 2001 and subsequently held numerous leadership positions, including Student Advocate, Girls Volleyball Coach, Assistant Athletic

Director, and Dean of Students. In 2013, Brother Lee won an election to represent East Smithfield on the Town Council, where he championed intiatives such as developing a commu- nity park. His other key initiatives included Back to School, Easter, Christmas Toy Distribution, Youth Summer Camp, the Smith Collins Park Juneteenth Cel- ebration, the revitalization of the Sarah Yard Center, and the recognition of local legends through street and other dedications. Brother Marlon A. Lee is survived by his parents,
