JUNE 2017

A HISTORY OF

INNOVATION

Our spa has been open for 15 years,

and in that time, I’ve seen many other practices adopt technologies that we adopted first. In fact, we were the first medical spa in southern Texas when we opened. I knew that I wanted to help people age beautifully on the outside, but also stay healthy on the inside. To that end, I’ve always looked for the new treatments that will give our clientele the best results possible. I’ve always been an innovator. I bought a carbon dioxide laser back in the early 1990s and used it to great effect. That laser could do biopsies and treat lesions that presented challenges to traditional medicine, and my patients loved the results. Back then, even the plastic surgeons didn’t understand the benefits of that technology. Today, of course, they all use lasers like mine. Then, when I started Beautique, I was on the first wave of physicians using Botox, because I saw the wonderful things it could do. Later on, our spa was an early adopter of Juvederm and Thermage. I still remember the articles published about the discovery of Botox. I read them all and took daily notes, a habit I still have, and closely followed the new treatment. I even read the scientific paper by Jean and Alistair Carruthers, the pioneers who discovered Botox’s cosmetic uses, when it was published in 1992. I wanted to know everything that I could, and I was very happy to become a Botox provider myself. As you can tell, innovation excites me, especially when I can combine technological innovation with the artistic nature of my job to achieve the right result for my clientele. I also love to talk about treatments and procedures. Sometimes, I get to go on television or write articles, like this one, and explain the benefits of what we do. This allows me to educate people on our field and help them make the right decisions about their own health. And that’s what it’s all really about: helping our patients be happy, healthy, and beautiful. I don’t know what treatments will lead to that end in the future, but I’m excited to find out! Please enjoy the rest of our newsletter.

4 DRINK HACKS TO KEEP YOUR BEVERAGE COOL

of salt, then submerge a can of soda in the bowl. This process will cool your drink more than twice as fast as just putting it in the freezer. This other example requires less work, but it takes more freezer space. And if you’re like the rest of us, your freezer is pretty packed in the summer! 2. Wet a paper towel and wrap it around a bottle or can before you place it in the freezer. The contents inside will cool much more quickly. If you have more time to plan, this hack will keep your drink cold for longer. Ice doesn’t fit in a bottle, and freezing your beer or other beverage will get you to Slushy Town in a hurry. 3. Fill an empty bottle about halfway, put the cap on, and place

it in the freezer on its side. When it’s frozen, pour your favorite beverage inside — the ice from top to bottom will keep the contents cool on the go. Bonus Hack: This has nothing to do with the sun, but is still a neat way to make drinking your beverage easier. If you go fancy and use a straw when you drink from a can, you know how hard it is to get the straw to stay put. 4. Spin the can’s tab around and feed the straw through it. Now you’ll have a well- behaved straw that doesn’t shift around when you need it to be there for you. The sun is hot, and the summer is long. You need the comfort of a cool beverage to help you get through it. Keep cool, wear sunscreen, and have fun!

The sun is summer’s greatest ally — and greatest enemy. For every sun-soaked day at the beach, there are sunburns trying to ruin the party. For every excuse to drink an icy beverage, the sunshine’s more determined to keep the drink from staying cool. These hacks will allow you to enjoy the benefits of the summer sun without the side effect of a warm beverage. First, let’s say you just got home from the grocery store where you purchased a 12-pack of your favorite soda. You’re thirsty and it’s room temperature at best , right? Patience is a virtue, but there’s nothing wrong with accelerating the process. 1. Fill a bowl with ice water and add a teaspoon

THE TRUTH

ABOUT BOTOX

BIBLE VERSE “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” targets the right groups of muscles, has good injection technique, and clearly understands how Botox works. This will lead to the best results, ones that look great and last a long time. Many of the things you hear about Botox are actually the result of treatment error, not the treatment itself. Few beauty treatments are as effective or misunderstood as Botox. Often poorly explained by the media, Botox is a household word with an allure of mystery. It’s also a really good treatment, backed by real science, and — when administered by a competent medical professional — it really works. Botox acts medically, intercepting nerve signals that cause muscles to tense up. When you see wrinkles, what you’re really seeing is the contracted muscles pulling at the skin. Botox lets those muscles — and you — relax, leading to a wrinkle- free and natural appearance. After treatment, you can shed years off your “perceived” age, and results last for months. Like most medical procedures, Botox is only as good as the person administering the treatment. It’s important that the person giving the treatment

The prevalence of Botox means that there are a lot of places to receive treatment. Unfortunately, not all of them will be good at it. Once you’ve found a good Botox provider and gone in for treatment, you’ll start to see results within the first 72 hours. It can take up to a

week for results to become fully realized, but odds are good that you’ll be getting compliments on your appearance within a few days, if not sooner. Is Botox right for you? It depends. If you’re willing to find the right provider — like Beautique Medical Spa — and you’re not afraid to go your own way, the great results of Botox treatment can be yours.

HAWAII IS CALLING

If you’re looking to take a tropical trip this spring break, what could be better than Hawaii? It’s the unofficial “family unwinding” capital of the world, known internationally for its perfect weather, absurdly beautiful beaches, and a great variety of activities that are sure to keep anyone engaged. Take the world-famous Road to Hana in Maui, for example — a twisting drive through miles of exotic rainforest, with breathtaking views of cliffs and gorgeous black sand beaches littered along the way, just perfect for stretching your legs and taking a dip. Contrary to its name, the road trip typically ends just past the small mountain town of Hana, in the Oheo Gulch, a rainforest area that boasts tons of waterfalls and standing pools like glass. Or, if a long drive doesn’t strike you as fun, take the kids to Turtle Beach on Oahu, where sea turtles swim, sometimes coming up on the sand to bask in droves. Get a bit of basking done yourself or strap on some fins and a mask to swim with the turtles — just don’t touch, or you might face a hefty fine. Maybe sea turtles aren’t your thing. Maybe you’re more into manta rays, which do not have stingers but do sport a wingspan of up to 12 feet. Take a Dip in the Aloha State

Watch these enchanting creatures do triple backflips in the cool night air. If you’re on the big island, you can see them at sundown off the Kona Coast. Watch their acrobatics from the shore or journey with your family to the sandy floor of the ocean, which is a lot easier than it sounds. Divers shine lights toward the surface, attracting the plankton that mantas love to eat. These harmless and immense animals will dance eerily close, and the effect is absolutely dazzling.
