The PUF At Work

Funded in part by $183.3 million from the Permanent University Fund, the Medical Education Building (MEB) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler represents a transformative investment in medical education and healthcare delivery for East Texas. Currently under construction, the $311.3 million project is designed to support the expansion of undergraduate and graduate medical education programs across the UT Health East Texas system. The 247,568-square-foot facility will provide interdisciplinary learning environments, including learning studios, anatomy labs, skills training and simulation centers, conference rooms, and student study spaces. The building will also house clinical services such as women’s imaging and health, orthopedics and sports medicine, pulmonary care, and a surgery center - supporting hands- on training for medical residents while expanding access to patient care. In addition to the academic and clinical spaces, the project includes a 953-space structured parking facility, a central utility plant, and a sky bridge connecting the Medical Education Building to the UT Health East Texas Hospital, strengthening campus connectivity and operational efficiency. With construction nearing completion and substantial completion anticipated in December 2025, the Medical Education Building reflects UT Health Tyler’s commitment to advancing medical education, strengthening the regional healthcare workforce, and delivering long-term benefits to the communities it serves through strategic investment of Permanent University Fund resources.
