I P l a n n e l g r a p h is one of the older types of audio-visual materials to be used extensively in church teach ing and evangelistic work. The Child Evangelism movement developed this technique around twenty years ago. The materials have been variously c a l l e d flannelgraph, flannelboard, suedegraph, Scripto-graph, etc. Ordi narily we have in this technique a stiff board of some kind covered by flannel or some material'with a nap that will hold a figure or picture backed with the same or similar material. In addition to a fixed cover ing for the board there are additional background and overlay flannel pieces that can be used. Lessons come usual ly in envelopes or in booklets that can be cut up. They are either precolored or in outline form for coloring. Some of the beautiful sets are those made years ago by artistically gifted teach ers. At Biola we use the symbol “ Flan” for these materials. We do not classify them, but use the straight alphabet ical arrangement with the special Biblical arrangement in the B section as outlined in our discussion of film strips. In the collation these materials offer some problems sometimes. Exam ples of what we have done will indi cate some of the possibilities: Flan The Foolish frog (Flan nelgraph) F72 Bible Supply Station, 1948. W76 23 pcs., color, manual. Flan Lessons on the Sermon on B47 the mount (Flannelgraph) 40:72 C h r i s t i a n Publications, 1952. 10 lessons, color, manual. A double Cutter number is used in the first example to lessen the danger of conflict. In the second example the regular Biblical number indicates that we have incident no. 72 in the harmony of the Gospels, the number 40 indicating this harmony. Regular subject heading and additional entries are used with any necessary cross references. In the case of the Biblical materials these are hardly necessary as the file itself, or the shelf list, can be consulted just as easily. The physical handling of these materials is something of a problem. Where there is a set of lessons, some of which use the same figure, one needs to be careful to number every piece plainly and see that the instruc tions are clear. The numbered pieces can be more easily kept track of if a

folder with several compartments is used, or several smaller envelopes in side a larger one. For circulation a portfolio of red rope board with a rib bon tie is very convenient. Some sets are larger than will go into the regular letter-size folder and file, and for anything over twelve inches we use the symbol for folio (f) and use a 15-inch heavy clasp envelope. There is still a good deal of irregu larity in publishing flannel lesson materials, and perhaps by giving a little attention to the problems of cataloging them producers can be more uniform and careful about ar ranging and labeling them. We par ticularly abhor the multiple-lesson sets. We think this tends to limit the use of the materials and makes for an earlier disintegration and confusion of the materials.
