BOK REVIEWS By Arnold D. Ehlert, Th.D., Librarian and Professor of Library Science at B IO LA Here the author, who is a British Baptist, takes all the mentions of prayer in the Book of Acts and the Epistles and uses this material in a series of twelve studies on various aspects of the Christian life both pri vate and corporate. He believes that what prayer did for the early church it can do now for those who will use it. These studies penetrate to the very heart of many of our contemporary problems and needs. “All the long way up the Christian road, from con version to the full stature of Christ, he moves along the way of prayer; the nearer he draws to the goal, the more will he know he still must pray,” he says on page 134. A careful reading of this book ought to make a differ ence in one’s life. It is also a contri bution to the discipline of Biblical theology. 143 pages; cloth; Harper & Bros., New York; $2.75. Taking the position that Philip pians reflects in a rather remarkable way the Apostle who wrote it, Dr. Rees seeks to make it not only under standable but loveable. In his lucid, yet spiritual style, he expounds the book and illustrates it by literary quo tations and anecdotes from his rich experience around the world. The author is now engaged in foreign spir itual life conference work for native pastors primarily. 127 pages; cloth; Fleming H. Revell Co., Westwood, N.J.; $2.00. Within the last two or three years a number of beautiful books have been published depicting the lands of the Bible in their present and in their archaeological aspects. These volumes have been profusely illustrated by photographs, maps, and diagrams. There seems to be no end of them. The present volume is published by one of America’s old, established map producers. Its thirty maps are un usually clear and easy to use. Each one presents a specific period or fea ture and is thus not cluttered with names. A special feature also of this Prayer is the Secret By R. E. O. White The Adequate M an Paul in Philippians By Paul S. Rees Story of the Bible W orld In M ap , Word, and Picture By Nelson Beecher Keyes

For all students of the Bible, and those who teach and preach in particular, this will be a most helpful volume. Subject and geographic indexes are included. 192 pages; cloth; C. S. Hammond & Co., Maplewood, N.J.; $5.95. By limiting his period the author is able to present the essentials of early U.S. Baptist history in one handy volume designed for use as a textbook in colleges and seminaries. Particular attention is given to the contributions of Baptists of the South before the Southern Baptist Convention was formed. There is an attempt to be ob jective with respect to the Northern contributions, however. Many por traits and illustrations and a number of appendices make the book addi tionally useful. A bibliography and index further commend it. 205 pages; cloth; American Press, New York; $3.00. I See W h a t God W an ts M e to Know Byr Kenneth N.
