President's Message
I hope you are all enjoying the late Spring weather! It is incredible to me how fast the year is going! I had a wonderful time at the CDS Midwinter. Kudos to Dr. Denise Hale and CDS for a successful meeting! The March Board of Trustees meeting has passed, and at the

time of publication, we are getting ready for Capital Conference in Springfield. Being an active member and participating in these events is a great way to show our federal and state legislators that we care. There is strength in numbers! It has been a busy early Spring legislatively, and more action alerts will undoubtedly be coming. Please be on the lookout for these and respond to support our efforts and protect our profession. Lindsay Wagahoff, our Government Relations Director, will send updates with more specifics. She is doing a great job! Please see the Component Resources Page on www.isds.org if your component needs help with communications. We can now send texts and messages to help communicate with your members (for a small fee). Informative, current talking points are also available on this page for your membership to pass on. We are putting the final touches on the planning for this September’s Annual Session, which will be held in East Peoria at the Embassy Suites. We will have some fantastic events, and I hope many of you will be there! During the Annual Session, you will hear about my theme for the year that highlights our communications. Communication is the lifeblood of any professional association. Without it, even the most well-intentioned organizations struggle to fulfill their mission, engage their members, and
conversations, effective communication builds trust, strengthens relationships, and fosters a sense of belonging within the association. Transparency is one of the most critical aspects of communication in a professional association. Members want to feel informed about key decisions, upcoming events, and the organization’s overall direction. Leadership sharing goals, challenges, and successes creates an atmosphere of openness and collaboration. People are far more likely to stay engaged when they understand how their contributions fit the bigger picture. Conversely, when communication is vague or inconsistent, members can feel disconnected or undervalued, which may lead to decreased participation and even attrition. Another essential component is two-way communication. Too often, organizations focus solely on pushing out information without creating opportunities for members to share feedback. A professional association should not just be a speaker but also a listener. Encouraging open dialogue, whether through surveys, town halls, or one-on-one conversations, gives members a voice in shaping the
4 ■ ILLINOIS DENTAL NEWS / MAY • JUNE 2025
organization. It also allows leadership to make more informed decisions that align with members’ needs and expectations. Beyond leadership communication, peer-to-peer interactions are equally vital. A professional association thrives when members connect to share ideas, solve problems, and collaborate on projects. Whether through structured networking events or informal gatherings, these connections help members feel part of a larger community. The stronger the sense of camaraderie, the more likely people are to remain active and invested in the association’s success. Technology has transformed the way professional associations communicate. While traditional methods like newsletters and in-person meetings remain valuable, digital tools such as email, social media, and virtual conferencing have expanded the reach and efficiency of communication. Associations that embrace these tools can engage members more consistently, providing timely updates and fostering discussions in real-time. However, with so many platforms available, it’s crucial to maintain a clear and consistent message across all channels to avoid confusion or information overload.
Communication also plays a key role in member recruitment and retention. When prospective members see an association that communicates effectively— whether through an informative website, engaging social media presence, or compelling testimonials— they are more likely to see value in joining. For current members, regular and meaningful communication reinforces their decision to stay involved. Highlighting success stories, recognizing member achievements, and providing valuable resources contribute to a strong sense of belonging and purpose. At its core, communication transforms a group of individuals into a thriving, connected professional association. It builds trust, fosters engagement, and ensures the organization remains relevant and responsive to its members. By prioritizing clear, open, and consistent communication, professional associations can sustain themselves and grow, evolve, and truly make a difference in their field. Wishing you all a wonderful Spring and Summer!

Strengthen Patient Connections by Making Your Website the Central Hub for Patient Communications By: Ashli Klingaman, Content Marketing Manager at ProSites
Patients expect more than high-quality dental care from practices. As the internet becomes increasingly crowded with websites designed for service, patients want convenience, transparency, and fast communication. This means your website can no longer be just an online business card, but should serve as the central hub for engaging patients and strengthening connections. Findings from ProSites’ 2025 State of Dental Marketing research show difficulty in scheduling and rescheduling appointments was the #1 patient complaint for two consecutive years, highlighting the need for an easy- to-use online booking system. Gone are the days when a phone call was the only way for patients to book an appointment or ask a question. Now, patients turn to digital channels for instant answers and seamless interactions. From appointment scheduling to patient education, the right strategy can transform your website into the ultimate tool for communication and growth. However, to stand out in a digital crowd, your practice will need to go beyond an optimized website and include other digital channels to remain competitive, build trust, and ultimately drive higher revenue. Why Your Website Should Be the Core of Patient Communications When patients have an expectation of convenience when interacting with your practice, it's important that your website offers more than just a place for patients to find your phone number. It should be the main hub where they engage with you. 82% of people will access your website via a mobile phone. So, ensuring your website is mobile-friendly and includes convenient ways to interact with your practice is necessary to stand out. Personalizing the Patient Experience Personalizing your patients’ experience with your office is an effective way to have your practice stand out. If you aren't communicating with patients regularly, there may be another practice who is. From appointment reminders to follow-up messages, automated tools can keep patients engaged without creating extra work for your team. Ensuring a seamless, personalized experience with minimal manual effort allows staff to focus on providing top-tier care while patients feel valued and informed every step of the way.
For example, you could use an automated system that inserts patient names into appointment reminders and follow-up messages. This simple touch can make a big difference in patient satisfaction while requiring no additional time from staff. Social media is another channel to engage with patients and provide valuable educational content. Regularly posting targeted information, such as dental-care tips, procedure explanations, and answers to common patient concerns, positions your practice as a trusted resource. Interactive content, like Q&A sessions and patient testimonials, also strengthens connections and keeps your practice top of mind. Conclusion Your website is more than just a digital front door. It’s the core of your patient communication strategy. By offering seamless access to information, personalized content, and multiple engagement channels, you can meet the evolving expectations of today’s patients and build lasting relationships. Looking to unify your website and your patient communications? Visit prosites.com/ISDS to learn more and unlock exclusive ISDS member discounts.

Helping Those in Need Dental Lifeline Network • Illinois’ Donated Dental Services (DDS) program helps people like Ken, 75, a widower who lives alone in Cook County. Sadly, Ken lost his wife of 49 years to a stroke, and he currently suffers from COPD which requires an inhaler. Ken’s dental health was also a concern: he was missing all but three teeth which were decayed and broken. With such few teeth, eating was incredibly difficult and Ken was losing significant weight. Unfortunately, Ken could not afford the treatment needed to address his deteriorating oral health. Formerly a truck driver, he no longer works due to his age and health. He survives on food stamps, his Social Security benefit, and a small pension. With high housing expenses including expensive home repairs, Ken’s bills greatly exceeded his income. Dental treatment seemed like a luxury far beyond his reach. Thankfully, a volunteer dentist came to Ken’s aid, extracting nine teeth, smoothing his jawbone, and donating a full upper and lower denture. Thanks to this caring DDS volunteer, Ken received thousands of dollars in donated treatment that restored his oral health and had a significant impact on his life!
