Our vision is certainly easier said than done. So, how do we continue to move toward delivering on this vision for every customer, at every location, and in every interaction? All four components of the We Make Building Easy vision are necessary : Safe, Guide, Wow, and Strive . For this month’s newsletter, we’ll focus our attention on how we can Strive together to move toward making our vision not just an aspiration, but a reality. Several years ago, I challenged everyone to view complacency as an enemy. When we’re complacent, we stand by idly while customers, competitors, and markets continue to evolve. By the time we notice we’re behind, we have to play catch-up while everyone else continues moving ahead. We never want to be in that position and always want to be the leader, forcing competitors to get winded chasing us — all of this while we add increasing value to customers and employees who appreciate working with an organization they know is committed to being out in front. So, what's the recipe for success? When we are striving and succeeding at being problem-solvers (with an appetite and discipline for making consistent incremental improvements) I usually see two areas of focus: First, I see employees helping one another. With an organization as large and diverse as FBS, you are surrounded by people who may have a little more experience, skill, or insight for a particular problem. When employees support, equip, train, and collaborate, we are better at striving. Whether it’s about load-building, installing, logistics, software, or selling, we improve quicker when employees doing the same or similar work help one another without waiting for centralized solutions or top-down permission from management. We are open to the help when we have the humility to seek or receive input from others without worrying about the fact that we received assistance. (Tip: I'm much more impressed by people who ask for help — and

to peers, teams, and departments outside of their own location. They also welcome outside input, recognizing that if we take advantage of our size, problem-solvers, and improvements (beyond our four walls), we strive better than when we only pay attention to improvements born out of our singular location. For us to build and maintain a learning, problem-solving, nimble organization, we must continue to focus on learning from one another and effortlessly sharing and absorbing lessons learned across the company. As we finish out the second half of 2020, talk with your supervisor and team about how each of you will respond to current challenges. How can you better leverage the skills, experiences, and insights among the men and women around you (who do the work every day)? How can you absorb and share insightful ideas with peers, teams, and departments across the company? Let’s resolve to strive well and move closer than ever to transforming our lofty vision to Make Building Easy into a reality that every customer experiences at every location and in every interaction. When we achieve and maintain this vision, we should offer our condolences to our competitors — it will be that impactful. We can do this. You can do this.

ENCOURAGING AN IMPROVED MINDSET The Purpose of 6S
Justin is a Nevada native, and (between the yard and inside sales in Caldwell and Fruitland) he has worked with FBS for two-and-a-half years. He loves riding his motorcycle whenever he can.
Imagine you are hosting a birthday party for a loved one and you would like to make a special cake. You are making it the day of the party to ensure maximum freshness, so you have limited time. The problem is that the kitchen is a mess with dirty dishes and leftover ingredients from the previous meal. When you go to get the mixing bowl out of the cupboard, it is not there. It is in the sink with a pile of unwashed dishes. The measuring cups are still in your beach bag from making sandcastles, and your recipe was written on a napkin, which was used to clean the mud tracked in by the dog. In a panic, you struggle through the mess to make the cake. As you remove the cake from the baking pan, it sticks, and you think, I need to add butter to the pan before putting the batter in. I should add this step to the recipe . But you do not have time for that now.
Abel has been with the company for almost 12 months. He loves to bowl with anyone who’s willing to go with him. If he’s not bowling, you can find Abel spending time outdoors with his awesome family.
Andrew has been with FBS for eight months. Originally from Hawaii, he loves spending time fishing with his AMAZING wife and son!
Your guests arrive, you are flustered, and you realize you did not put up the streamers and blow up the balloons.
This is how it feels to work in a disorganized workplace and why we do 6S. The purpose of 6S is twofold. The first is to provide basic stability . Can you find what you need, when you need it, to get the job done on time? Secondly, it encourages an improvement mindse t. Lining the baking pan with butter could be added to the recipe for next time, if you feel like you have the time … and of course, streamers and balloons.
KC has been with FBS for almost three years. Hunting and fishing are his passions (outside of working at FBS). He loves getting away with his two wonderful daughters to spend time out in the mountains.
Tristan is going on four years with FBS and is the sales manager in Caldwell. He is married to Jennifer Mitchell in Caldwell's installed division. Tristan is also proud of his four kids and darling little granddaughter.
Brenner handles all of Caldwell’s inside sales, including shipping, handling, inventory, and transfers. Brenner has been with FBS for three years and is PASSIONATE about photography and traveling. (In fact, he took the pictures.)

MEET DANIEL MIDBY
Assistant Manager
The team has filled out since then, but wearing many hats seems to have settled into Daniel’s everyday work routine. “I try to help however I can every day. We’re a small team here, so we all need to be there for each other,” he says. “I help with ordering, selling, organizing, pricing, operations — you name it. Whatever little fires our team needs help putting out, I try to get them done.” Being willing to jump into helping with any role is a whole lot easier when you’re working in an environment that you love. “Working with my coworkers every day is what keeps me coming back, and our customers are what keep me entertained. They’re the nicest and liveliest bunch of people, to put it mildly.” Outside work, Daniel still likes to get his hands dirty by taking on woodworking projects, but his favorite pastimes are camping and fishing. “Fishing is my favorite thing to do. I don’t even have to be catching anything to be happy doing it,” Daniel says. That willingness to go with the flow seems to have served Daniel well in every aspect of life.

he first started with us, he got a little more than he bargained for. “I was actually hired to work as a receiver, but within my first two weeks, our location went through a lot of management changes and several positions opened
up,” Daniel explains. “I found myself suddenly having to wear a lot of different hats, but that crazy time is what got me to where I am now.”
