More weeks passed by and he was still searching for any sign of human life, but nothing could be found. He fell into the darkest time he had ever lived, always wondering how he could go on, but he knew that he had to and maybe one day everyone would come back. The town that had once been the loudest, most enjoyable place to be had turned into a dark, gloomy ghost town. As the days kept passing by, the smell in the town became more rank. He couldn ’ t stand it anymore. If he had lived there any longer, he would have passed out. He had to do something. He was searching for answers trying to find where the smell was coming from. He limped to the other side of town as fast as he could, the closer he got, the stronger the putrid odour became. He had found the answer. It was all the corpses that had been lying around on the ground for all that time rotting by the day. The smell was horrendous, he couldn ’ t bear to stay there anymore and if he did, he would have fainted. He staggered away from the field trying to figure out ways to get rid of the stink. Then the deafening reality came to him. The next day he went out to the field prepared with a mask and a shovel. He took one look at the field and thought to himself ‘ this is going to take forever. ’ He started slowly picking at each body and one by one burying them. By the end of the day, he had buried over 20 bodies in the wet, tacky earth.

It started getting dark outside so he had decided to go home and get to sleep early so he could get a head start on the work the next day. As he lay in bed, he noticed that it was brighter than usual outside. He looked out of his hut to see what was going on and bright yellow dots appeared in the sky. He was in disbelief; he didn ’ t know what they were. Slowly, one by one, more of the bright coloured dots appeared in the sky like jewels: diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and pearls. He was amazed. He slowly adjusted to the light overnight. In the morning when he had woken up, they had all disappeared. He was confused but still got back to work the next day. After a long day of burying the innocents, he finally finished the gruesome work. He decided to sit outside for a bit before he went to bed and once again, he saw the bright lights appear from out of the inky sky, but this time there were many more. They seemed to twinkle and wink at him, watching over him like the beautiful eyes of the beloved people he had laid to rest. Somehow, these strange, new, twinkling lights brought him comfort he had not known for so long.
