LESSONS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM How One Teacher Shaped My Future May 2025 720 Goodlette Rd. N, Suite 304, Naples, FL 34102 • www.AttorneyShapiro.com
Every May, we celebrate National Teacher Day and National Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to recognize the educators who shape our lives in ways we can never fully repay. Even for those of us who have long left the classroom, their influence stays with us. I think we all have that one person who saw something in us before we could see it in ourselves. For me, that person was Ms. Weingart. As a child, I wasn’t the most focused student. I wasn’t disruptive, but I struggled to pay attention. Many of my teachers assumed that meant I wasn’t keeping up. The school administration even believed I wasn’t fit for mainstream classes and wanted to transfer me to the remedial track — a decision that could have altered my academic and professional future. But Ms. Weingart refused to let that happen. She saw beyond my distraction and recognized I wasn’t struggling because I lacked ability. I simply needed guidance, patience, and someone who believed in me. She personally evaluated me, uncovered my potential, and fought for me when others were ready to give up. Ms. Weingart was also my advocate. She ensured I stayed in my mainstream class and didn’t stop there. Ms. Weingart spent extra time tutoring me after school to make sure I didn’t just stay in class but also excelled. And because of her, I did. I went on to graduate college with high honors, earn a law degree, and build a successful career helping people who, like me, just needed someone to fight for them. The lesson that made me a better lawyer. Reflecting on my work as a personal injury attorney, I realize what Ms. Weingart did for me is much like what I do for my clients every day. Many of the people who come to me after an accident feel like the system is against them — and for good reason. Insurance companies try to minimize their injuries, delay their claims, or deny them compensation altogether. Just like my school was willing to put me on a lower track without realizing my full potential, these corporations dismiss hardworking people who have suffered real harm. And just as Ms. Weingart fought for me, I fight for my clients. I know firsthand that having just one advocate who refuses to back down can change a person’s future. So, when I take on a case, I strive to do
more than just represent a client. I want to ensure their voices are heard, their struggles are acknowledged, and their rights upheld. Celebrating the teachers who shape us all. In honor of National Teacher Day, I encourage you to take a moment to think about the teachers who have influenced you. You may have had a teacher who saw your potential before you did. Maybe you were also fortunate enough to have a teacher who fought for you so you could reach your full potential and lead a successful, rewarding career. An educator’s impact often extends beyond the classroom, which was undoubtedly true of Ms. Weingart. Her fight didn’t just change my life — it also indirectly helped change the lives of thousands of clients. The justice and compensation they received resulted from one teacher who believed in me.
If you or a loved one has been injured and feels like the system is working against you, know that you don’t have to fight alone. Everyone deserves a fair chance. Sometimes, it just takes the right advocate to make all the difference. -Marc L. Shapiro

The Ultimate Mother’s Day Breakfast Plan
TREAT MOM TO A MAGICAL MORNING
Present it beautifully. You can elevate even a simple breakfast with a few thoughtful additions. Ditch the disposables and use real plates, silverware, and linen napkins. Deliver the breakfast with care on a lovely tray accompanied by a small vase of flowers. Keep everything organized neatly, and include a handwritten card or note to add a heartfelt message to the meal. Make it a team effort. Get the whole family involved — minus Mom, of course! Even young kids can pitch in by spreading butter, arranging fruit, or folding napkins. Older kids can help out more with the actual cooking. To make Mother’s Day morning stress-free for everyone, do prep work the night before. Chop fruit, prepare the coffeemaker, and premix the pancake batter. And don’t forget the cleanup. Working as a team to wash dishes and put things away will ensure a

Injured on Vacation?
HERE’S WHAT TO DO
File a Claim One of the biggest questions people have after an out-of-state accident is where to file a claim. Just as you would document and report the injury to authorities in the state you are injured, you must also file the claim in the state where the accident occurred. This means if you are visiting Florida and injured in an accident, your case must be handled under Florida law. It’s important to note that you can receive medical treatment in your home state while your legal team handles your case. Find the Right Legal Representation Because you must file your claim in the state where the accident occurred, you must also work with an attorney licensed to practice there. A local attorney understands local personal injury law and is best qualified to handle your case. If your case goes to trial, the trial will also take place in the state where the
Summer is just around the corner, meaning the vacation season has arrived. Whether it’s by plane or car, traveling is fun and exciting, but an injury can quickly turn all that excitement into a stressful experience. Getting injured out of state can make the situation more difficult and create confusion about how to move forward. If you find yourself injured in another state, here’s what you need to know. Take Action Immediately No matter where an accident occurs, the first steps are the same. Call 911 and report the accident to ensure it’s documented. If possible, take photos of vehicle damage and injuries at the scene. Collect contact and insurance details of the parties involved and any witnesses of the accident. However, your health should be the top priority. Be sure to seek medical attention even for seemingly minor injuries, as they can worsen later.

STRAY DOG OUTSMARTS FATE AND SAVES HER PUPPY’S LIFE
When our furry friends get sick, it’s up to us to bring them in for a veterinary appointment. It’s part of the responsibility of being a pet owner, but stray animals have no owners. Who takes care of them when they most need it? Sadly, help is beyond their reach in many cases. However, some dogs won’t let anything stand in their way, especially if it’s a difference between life and death. In January 2025, a stray mother dog noticed her puppy stopped moving and jumped into action. Without an owner to guide her, the mother brought her baby to a local veterinarian clinic in Istanbul, Turkey. The staff saw the dog standing outside their door, so they checked on her and noticed the lifeless puppy. The pup was freezing cold, and the vet wasn’t even sure if it was still alive! The vet could not hear the puppy’s heartbeat with a stethoscope, so he checked it with a
needle, which provided promising results! The dog was alive but had a very slow heartbeat. The vet used a blow dryer to warm the puppy up, and before long, it was awake and moving again. All the while, the mother was at the puppy’s side with her head perched on the examination table. So, how did the puppy’s mother know where to take her baby? This wasn’t her first encounter with this vet clinic; the same doctor was already treating the puppy’s littermate after good Samaritans brought her to the same clinic a few days earlier. Both puppies have been reunited with their mother and are all under the close eye of the clinic. Whether discussing humans or dogs, parents are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure their children survive and thrive. However, dogs might have to be more creative with their efforts.
