Lessons from a Canadian

We have just recently participated in our annual ORPS Can-Am games. It ’ s a friendly competition between the two main people groups that holiday here each year, the Americans and the Canadians. It is meant to encourage participation, cooperation and the benefits of teamwork among friends. It got me thinking about a familiar group of Canadians that can teach us about the value and benefit of teamwork. I am speaking of the famous Canada Goose. (Is it a pest or a blessing?) Most of us are familiar with the sight and sound of a V-shaped formation of large birds flying high in the sky accompanied by a loud honking sound. They are actually an amazing lesson in teamwork. Each autumn, as flocks migrate thousands of miles they do not fly alone or randomly. They move together in that familiar formation on purpose. As each goose flaps its wings it creates an uplift for the bird following. This enables them to reduce wind resistance, conserve energy, and travel faster and farther together than they ever could alone. Another interesting lesson from the geese is that the leadership rotates through the flock. When the lead goose grows tired, it falls back and another takes its place. No one goose carries the burden for the whole journey. The shared responsibility enables greater endurance and success. What is also inspiring in geese is their innate sense of loyalty for each other. If one goose is injured or gets sick and falls behind, two others will leave the formation to stay with it until it recovers or dies. Only then will they rejoin the flock. No one is left alone. Scientists also say that even the honking sounds of the geese serve as a form of encouragement to others in the flock. It helps them keep their speed up. So the Canada goose reminds us that cooperation multiplies strength, shared responsibility sustains momentum and loyalty builds community. We can all travel farther and do better together than we can ever do alone. Honk! Honk!

Chaplain Paul returned after successful surgery with a warm welcome from everyone.

We had different speakers and musicians for the month.

Join us every Sunday in the LP Ballroom at 8:50am.

Everyone is Welcome.
