Cover Photo - Alfred and Elizabeth Mercer moved their family from Kent, England to Emporia, KS to Matfield Green, KS in 1871. They homesteaded one of our headquarters in 1872 and they started running and putting together Pioneer Ranch. Their youngest son William was born on the homestead in 1874. He married his wife Hannah Brock May 8, 1907. William and Hannah had 5 children. Hannah passed away in 1931 and William in 1936. At that time their 2 sons Alfred and David (Dave’s Grandpa) took the reins and kept on ranching. David Brock Mercer married Hazel Walker on May 8, 1937. David and Hazel also had 5 children. They lost their oldest son in infancy. They lost their youngest son, Paul and daughter in law Jeri in a tragic car wreck July 24, 1976. Paul was the cowboy and planning to take over the ranch. After this tragedy the future was unknown for a bit, but, Dave and Hazel’s daughter, Nancy (Dave’s Mom) and her husband, Rick Griffin took over and started running Pioneer Ranch and leasing all of the land that David B Mercer INC had acquired. That’s how it is still done today. David B. Mercer INC is owned and operated by David and Hazel’s remaining children Jim Mercer and Marilyn Rowley, along with Rick Griffin for Nancy. We lost Nancy in 2020, But today, Dave and Amber Griffin along with Rick own and operate Pioneer Ranch LC. Dave and Amber have 3 kids, Brock, Wyatt, and Hannah. Brock got married this past summer to his wife Paige. They’re finishing up college at Fort Hays State and plan to come back to the ranch. Wyatt just started college at Butler County JUCO and is playing baseball and majoring in Finance. Hannah is going to be a 7th grader and also loves helping on the ranch. Mainly with the horses. Our kids are the 6th generation to grow up on Pioneer Ranch. We manage land for a couple of other landowners as well in the SW corner of Chase County in the Flint Hills. We run a mostly Angus based cow herd that is majority Fall calves. We also buy and run stockers through grass season. Normally, selling in July/August. We also take in customer yearlings and some customer cows as well. We run Black and Red angus bulls. We wean our calves in August. Our Hfrs usually start calving later on in September for a 60 day season and the cows follow shortly for 75 days. The maternal side of the bull is the most important part of our purchasing decision. We want to make great cows that do well on flint hills grass and run out all year. We do retain most of our heifers for replacements and usually sell our strs weighing 850-950 at El Dorado Livestock in December. We do a lot of our stocker business buying and selling with Superior Livestock. Barrett Broadie is our rep on the selling side. We rely on our kids along with Bud and Troy Higgs to help us look after the cattle. On March 16, 1882 Alfred J Mercer was issued Brand # 201 for his cattle and horses. The brand was a bar A. The first brand book for the state of KS was issued in 1939 and the Mercer Bros have a brand that was issued June 20, 1939. It is the bar cross brand on the Right hip just like we still use today. The Mercer Bros went on to just be David Mercer, he transferred the brand to Rick Griffin and now it is Pioneer Ranch LC.
