Bull Thoughts After 40+ years in the business, these random thoughts, ideas, etc. (that potentially could save producers a lot of headaches). * Test bulls 35-40 days before turnout, that leaves time for a re-test if needed. The semen that was collected on any given day was actu - ally produced approximately 60 days before testing!!! * Testing early also will give producers time to clear up any possible injuries, etc. * Quick removal of a limping bull due to injury, front or rear sprain, etc., and putting them in a small pen can clear up many bulls. Just like anyone with a sprain or torn ligament - less movement (with no cows to chase in the same pen) will help. * Quick treatment of foot rot, any infection of any kind (even with a dart gun is great). Medication at the first stages is extremely important. Obviously getting bulls out ASAP for rest, but medication in the system ASAP is the best step. * Always best to run older bulls together. Most broken penis injuries occur when younger bulls are in the same breeding pasture with older, aggressive bulls. One bull is breeding when the other bull plows into him from the side. * To many bulls in a pasture is generally worse than to few. Space, time, fighting, chasing, mounting, ends up many times in broken penis, broken legs and injured bulls. When bulls keep their mind on the business at hand, they behave better. * Vesicular adenitis is a seminal vesicular infection which can be caused at any time due to infections, of any kind, that can move through the animals system to seminal vesicules. This causes white blood cells in the semen which prevents veterinarians from passing a BSE check. We are not Veterinarians but if this should occur (not very often) have your veterinarian give full dosages of Mitcol, Draxtin and LA300 all at the same time. All three drugs do basically the same thing but each drug does just a touch different, most bulls will clear up fine, and retest in 4 weeks.
